In deploying PUBG Update 11.1, developer PUBG Corp. has launched Metal Gear Solid V-like Fulton Balloons in the form of an all-new Emergency Pickup feature. The Fulton in MGSV has multiple uses; for one, while on the ground, players can attach the balloon’s harness to their character and await extraction by plane. Players are also able to deploy the Fulton for purposes of extracting various items or other people.

Though the Fulton recovery system is best known for appearing in MGSV, it also featured prominently in the PSP title Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. As a key mechanic, the recovery balloon functioned as a way to rescue Prisoners of War and dispatch opposing forces. Metal Gear isn’t the only notable pop culture franchise to employ the real-world Fulton surface-to-air recovery system, either. Many may recall Batman being extracted in a similar manner in The Dark Knight, though the film referred to the device as a skyhook. Now it’s PUBG’s turn to deploy the Fulton extraction technique.

Available now on PC Test Servers, PUBG Update 11.1 reintroduces the highlands of Paramo with “updated terrain,” ushers in host of new weapon balance updates, and, most interestingly, deploys an MGSV-like Fulton Balloon feature in the form of Emergency Pickup. Once players deploy Emergency Pickup, a Fulton Balloon gets released and begins to inflate; from there, the wait time for pickup lasts 60 seconds. Up to four players can attach themselves to the device while waiting. When the plane arrives and hoists players into the air, parachuting out is optional at any point. There are other limitations, though. Though players can be fired upon while in the air, they cannot shoot back at enemies. In addition, Emergency Pickup isn’t accessible before the first circle or after the fourth circle. As a lootable item, the only way to obtain the Fulton is by finding it on Erangel, Miramar, Sanhok or Vikendi.

The addition of Fulton Balloons should mix up PUBG’s gameplay loop quite a bit. Evidently, the feature will require players to think tactically before using it, though, especially if deployed in a group. Once use of Emergency Pickup becomes more widespread within the player-base, it’ll be interesting to see the creative ways in which fans take advantage of the extraction system.

PUBG mania first picked up steam in early 2017. The craze persisted for quite a long while, though Fortnite‘s battle royale mode eventually came in and stole some of the title’s thunder. There’s still a dedicated fanbase that continues returning to PUBG, one that will likely receive ongoing support from developers for many years to come.
