PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds just received a new patch, and with it comes a new starting plane that’s going down in flames. PUBG has been a main fixture of the Battle Royale scene since 2017, and it’s still trying to find ways to innovate and shake up the existing formula. The latest means is through a flaming plane at the start of matches, changing how players get onto the map.

PUBG Corporation has been adding new content to the game in recent months, with new map Taego having been added just last month. Taking a page from Warzone, PUBG also included a second-chance mechanic that allows players to come back into a match after dying early on in the proceedings. There have also been cosmetic PUBG additions akin to Fortnite’s, allowing players to dress their in-game characters up in wacky costumes.

Patch 13.1 for PUBG continues the trend of new content. The new update increases the amount of care packages that players will find in Taego, allowing access to more loot to help players succeed. Other additions are the Taego Secret room that houses high quality loot and can only be opened with special keys, a change in map rotation and an update to the spawn rate of items.

How The New PUBG Flaming Starting Plane Works

The new starting plane is being added into PUBG via patch 13.1 as well, adding a new element of danger and urgency. The plane will experience engine failure and catch fire, quickly plunging players towards the PUBG map in an attempt to make an emergency landing. While the plane will move faster than the standard starting plane, fall height will vary drastically, meaning that the duration of a player’s fall out of the plane will differ depending on when they jump. Players who jump early will be able to glide to farther reaches of the map, while those who jump later will be able to travel only a short distance. Those who stay to the end will lose 50% of their health.

Adding this new starting plane to PUBG is an interesting move, amping up the peril that players find themselves in from the very beginning of a match. The randomness of the plane appearance in a match also adds new tension to the game, with players having to adjust their landing spots on the fly if the plane is dropping faster than normal. With PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds rumored to become free-to play, fans may have plenty of other interesting changes to look forward to in the near future.
