Is a movie based on Puff The Magic Dragon still in the works? Dragons are undoubtedly some of the coolest creatures in all of mythology, but there haven’t been a lot of great movies based on them. Outside of occasional gems like the original Dragonheart – which featured a dragon voiced by the late Sean Connery – or Reign Of Fire, there are quite a few duds. Game Of Thrones’ Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion are also among the most convincing dragons ever seen onscreen.

Puff The Magic Dragon is a famous song from folk trio Peter, Paul And Mary, with the song depicting the friendship between the titular dragon and a young boy. After some magical adventures together, the boy grows up and moves on from Puff. The Puff The Magic Dragon song was a big hit in 1963, despite some critics interrupting its title and lyrics to be about drug use, which the songwriters always denied. A CBS animated special loosely adapted the song in 1978, with the Puff The Magic Dragon cartoon featuring the voice of Burgess Meredith (Rocky) as the title dragon.

There have been other adaptations too, including a 2007 Puff The Magic Dragon book that gave the titular creature a happy ending after the song’s almighty downer. A movie version was announced in 2016, but is it still in development?

Puff The Magic Dragon Was Announced By Fox

In 2016 it was reported that Trolls director Mike Mitchell would helm the Puff The Magic Dragon movie, while Akiva Goldsman would act as producer. Curiously, the movie was set to be a mixture of live-action and animation, which Mitchell had some experience with, having directed Alvin And The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked.

No Updates Have Been Given On The Puff The Magic Dragon Movie

Following this initial announcement, little to nothing has been heard about the Puff The Magic Dragon movie. In the interim, Mike Mitchell moved on to direct The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, which arrived in 2019. It’s possible development on the movie got pushed back due to the Fox/Disney merger, though there are no signs of it in development.

Puff The Magic Dragon May Not Be Happening

Given the lack of updates or general movement on the Puff The Magic Dragon movie adaptation, it’s looking unlikely it will happen. It sounds like a project that could be well-suited to Disney+ or – even better – something Pixar could do great things with but for the time being, it appears to have been quietly cancelled. Those seeking a dragon-related animated adventure in the near future have Disney’s own Raya And The Last Dragon starring Kelly Marie Tran to look forward to in 2021.
