A script for the Pumpkinhead remake is reportedly complete and moving forward with production. The 1988 monster movie is one of only two feature films directed by Stan Winston, the late special effects icon known for his work on the Terminator, Jurassic Park, Alien, and Predator series, winning a total of four Academy Awards throughout his career. His directorial debut from 1988 stars Lance Henriksen as a grieving father who conjures the titular monster to seek revenge against those responsible for his son’s death.

Pumpkinhead didn’t make much noise at the box office during its theatrical run, grossing $3.5 million against a $4.4 million production budget. However, the film found a larger audience through home video and cable TV, which was enough to launch a franchise that includes a 1994 direct-to-video sequel subtitled Blood Wings and two more follow-ups made for TV in 2006 and 2007, none of which were as well-received as the original. In 2016, it was announced that Saw producer Peter Block was spearheading a Pumpkinhead reboot with S. Darko writer Nate Atkins.

Now, Bloody Disgusting has learned exclusively that the script for the Pumpkinhead remake has been completed and is ramping up to start production sometime soon. This means a director should be announced in the coming months. After that, the cast could start coming together.

The upcoming Pumpkinhead remake is coming from the studio Paramount Players, an offspring of Paramount Pictures that has been quietly expanding its horror catalogue in recent years. The company was behind last year’s supernatural thriller, Spell, along with the latest installment in the Paranormal Activity franchise, Next of Kin, that was released last month. Paramount Players also has several other intriguing projects in development such as Orphan: First Kill, a prequel to the 2009 film, along with a prequel to 2019’s Pet Sematary. Now, it appears a remake of Pumpkinhead can be added to that list.

The demon known as Pumpkinhead, which was brought to life masterfully by Winston’s practical effects, is one of the most memorable monsters to ever grace the silver screen, and the film has only gained more and more of a cult following over the years. Producer Peter Block has said he wishes to honor Winston’s original work by maintaining the use of practical effects, which is great news for fans of Pumpkinhead. Now that the remake’s script has been completed, the production process can begin ramping up, though it’s still too early predict a release date.
