A new teaser confirms that the trailer for the long-awaited Puss in Boots: The Last Wish will release in eight days. First being introduced in 2004’s Shrek 2, the playful and adventurous Puss, voiced by Antonio Banderas, quickly became a fan favorite. The character appeared once more alongside Shrek (Mike Myers) and Donkey (Eddie Murphy) in Shrek the Third in 2007 and Shrek Forever After in 2010 before eventually getting his own standalone movie with 2011’s Puss in Boots.

Puss in Boots performed well box office and received generally positive reviews from both audiences and critics. A 13-minute short film titled Puss in Boots: The Three Diablos was released in 2012, but an official feature-length sequel became mired in development hell due to script rewrites and corporate restructuring. Last year, however, it was revealed that Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was finally coming, with Banderas returning and a release date set for fall of 2022. The film, which is directed by Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado, is said to revolve around Puss’ quest to find the mythical Last Wish in order to restore his nine lives after losing eight over the course of his many adventures.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In a short new teaser posted to Twitter, DreamWorks Animation reveals that the first trailer for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish will release in eight days, on March 15. The funny 10-second teaser shows Puss about to break into song when a giant church bell lands on top of him, putting him on his ninth and final life. Check out the full teaser below:

Puss has always been a source of comic relief in the Shrek movies and his own spinoffs, but he was also characterized by his fearlessness and willingness to throw himself into danger. With the teaser seemingly showing how Puss ends up on his final life, the upcoming sequel is sure to present a slightly different version of the character. No longer having a safety blanket of lives with which to protect himself, Puss will be forced to approach dangerous scenarios with much more caution than before, since one wrong step might see him die for real.

It was previously rumored that Shrek might make an appearance in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and, unfortunately, the new teaser from DreamWorks doesn’t hint at whether that’s true or not. Shrek 2 remains a fan-favorite Shrek movie, and the franchise is seen by many to have never reached that same level of quality with subsequent releases. After having spent more than a decade in development, hopefully, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is able to deliver a worthy follow-up to Puss in Boot and remind fans why the adventurous cat is so beloved when it releases on September 23.
