Found footage zombie horror Quarantine has spawned one sequel so far, but will Quarantine 3 ever happen? The first Quarantine movie was directed by John Erick Dowdle of The Poughkeepsie Tapes fame and released in 2008. A remake of Spanish horror REC helmed by Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza, the film follows news reporter Angela Vidal (Dexter’s Jennifer Carpenter) and cameraman Scott (Steve Harris) as they tail a firefighter night shift crew for a TV piece. After an emergency call leads them to an apartment building, they find its residents are suffering from a rabies induced zombie-like virus just as the CDC arrives to quarantine the place.

Just as REC got a sequel with REC 2, the remake was followed by Quarantine 2: Terminal in 2011. However, while the first Quarantine stuck pretty close to the plot of REC, the sequel deviated from its roots. Directed by John Pogue, Quarantine 2: Terminal ditched the premise of Quarantine and REC by setting the action in an airport terminal where a group of entirely new characters faced another rabies-zombie outbreak.

Eight years after the release of Quarantine 2: Terminal, fans of the budding film franchise are wondering whether they’ll ever get to Quarantine 3. Currently, the likelihood of a second sequel isn’t high – here’s why.

Quarantine 3 Is Not In Production

At the end of Quarantine 2: Terminal it was revealed the as-yet-unnamed airport was none other than Las Vegas’ McCarran International Airport and it looked as though the stage was set for a Sin City-set sequel. However, since the first sequel’s 2011 release there has been no talk of a Quarantine 3 happening.

A zombie horror directed by Filip Maciejewicz titled Quarantine L.A. was released in 2013 but has nothing to do with the first two Quarantine films – in fact, its original title was Infected.

Quarantine 3 Is Not To Be But There Is REC 3

While the prospect of Quarantine 3 looks bleak, fans can always watch REC 3: Genesis instead. Whereas the first two REC films were set in a Barcelona apartment building, REC 3: Genesis moves the action to a country manor where a newlywed couple are celebrating their wedding only to have their party interrupted by a zombie outbreak.

The second REC sequel was followed by a third released in 2014. Set on a military ship, REC 4: Apocalypse refocused the action on its original protagonist Angela (Manuela Velasco) and was the final installment in the REC franchise. So, while fans of the remakes could be waiting indefinitely for Quarantine 3 to happen, at least there are four films in the original REC franchise to enjoy.
