In an interview discussing his upcoming memoir, Queer Eye star Jonathan Van Ness discusses the importance of vulnerability when exploring the human condition. As one of the fabulous five hosts of Queer Eye, Van Ness began making headlines for his debonair cosmetic and salon skills and has since explored his writing abilities by sharing stories of his life. Van Ness’ new book Love That Story: Observations from a Gorgeously Queer Life will be his second book after his 2019 memoir Over the Top: A Raw Journey to Self-Love.

In an interview with People, Van Ness explained that his second book will dive even deeper as he continues to refuse to hold back from those darker topics. The Queer Eye star explained, “When you’ve stared down addiction, abuse, and trauma, you get bored with small talk. Give me authenticity. I want to keep learning, keep writing, and keep sharing with you as we do a whirlwind tour of topics that invite us to examine assumptions, expand horizons and learn more about what makes us all so messy and gorgeous.”

Van Ness is thrilled to share some of his truth in his second novel, as well as explore the human condition from his perspective. Having been exposed to both small-town realism and astronomical fame, his experience has been a unique one. “Throughout my career, I’ve gotten to interview experts across so many fields from science, politics, academic scholars, some of the most successful people in the world, to working with incredible people both in front of and behind the camera.” Van Ness’ second book seeks to detail the growth Van Ness has experienced since the first book in a collection of essays. “I can’t wait for people to laugh along with me as I attempt to make sense of some of our most pressing issues.”

Perhaps part of what makes Queer Eye so enjoyable to fans is the authentic joy that is expressed by the participants by the end of each episode. Each transformed individual exits the show not only looking fabulous but also exuding inner confidence after getting advice from the five hosts, including Van Ness. Van Ness has proved in only a few years that his power stems not only from his self-care insight but from his willingness to tell his story to encourage others to share their own. Leading by example, Van Ness seeks to provide a platform to those who are silenced from every corner of humanity as he continues to improve himself. Van Ness’ upcoming memoir, Love That Story: Observations from a Gorgeously Queer Life is set to be released in April 2022.
