The latest episode of WandaVision sees Quicksilver reference his death in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but the moment is an insult to Hawkeye. The plot of WandaVision took a surprising turn recently when Pietro Maximoff appeared at Wanda Maximoff and Vision’s front door. But it wasn’t Aaron Taylor-Johnson reprising his role, with Evan Peters instead playing Quicksilver in the MCU after doing so in Fox’s X-Men movies.

Despite the new appearance that Quicksilver has in WandaVision, the show has so far operated as if this is supposed to be the original version of Pietro from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He doesn’t know why he looks different, but Quicksilver does have some knowledge of past MCU events, including his death. Pietro directly mentions this in WandaVision episode 6 and does so in a surprising way. Quicksilver remembers his last moments alive by saying, “I got shot like a chump in the street for no reason at all.” That line is a clear reference to how Quicksilver died in Avengers: Age of Ultron and ultimately proves to be a major slight at Hawkeye.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

WandaVision‘s Quicksilver is right that he died in the street, and the haunting image of Quicksilver appearing as a dead corpse reminds Scarlet Witch of that fact later on. But to say that he died for no reason isn’t true. Quicksilver’s role in Avengers: Age of Ultron‘s finale was to round up stragglers on the floating remains of Sokovia and escort them to SHIELD’s transport vehicles. While he thought they saved everyone, Pietro eventually sees Hawkeye went back to save a kid. Hawkeye and the child are moments away from getting shot by Ultron, but Quicksilver rushes in to push them out of the way. He saved two lives with this act, which gave Quicksilver a heroic end to his brief time in the MCU.

Even though Avengers: Age of Ultron didn’t deliver the most eloquent death for Quicksilver, it still works for the story and meant something to the characters. Most importantly, Pietro sacrificed himself to save Hawkeye, who is arguably the most valuable member of the Avengers. Now that WandaVision‘s Quicksilver is saying he died for no reason, that insults Hawkeye’s life and value, not to mention that of the Sokovian kid. If this was really how the MCU’s Pietro felt about his sacrifice, then it defeats the entire purpose of his death in the first place.

With this remark from Quicksilver, viewers could take his Hawkeye insult as another sign that he isn’t who he appears to be. Pietro dances around specifics of his and Wanda’s past and how he got there while asking potentially important questions like how Scarlet Witch is doing this or where she kept the rest of Westview’s children. This Quicksilver dropped his accent and even acts differently from the version featured in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and this specific line indicates the Pietro shown here wouldn’t make the same sacrifice. As the final episodes of WandaVision unfold, it will be fascinating to see how Quicksilver factors into the remaining story or if Hawkeye appears considering his friendship with Wanda.
