Ubisoft a slew of new content set in and around its long-running Rainbow Six, including new content Rainbow Six Siege. Despite being in its sixth year, Siege continues to deliver a unique blend of military-sim and arcade-style competitive combat. Since its launch, the game has evolved significantly, and Ubi doesn’t look to be done with the franchise anytime soon.

While the most interesting news may be the new details of Rainbow Six Extraction, the news with the biggest impact, though, is crossplay and cross-progression finally coming to Rainbow Six Siege. This is a feature that has garnished increased demand in recent years as more and more games have adopted such features. It will work a little differently in Siege, though, as only certain platforms will be able to play with others.

As the lines between platforms blur, more players want the ability to play with friends regardless of the platform either party is using. Rainbow Six Siege is rolling out the first of its updates on June 30, as Ubisoft looks to expand the game’s horizon. With Siege’s esport and online competition still growing, this move could increase that growth. Console players, though, will have to wait a bit longer.

R6 Crossplay: Who Can Play With Whom & When

On June 30, Rainbow Six Siege crossplay and cross-progression will be available across PC, Stadia, and Luna, so players on any of those platforms can lay siege with their friends and carry over their stats and unlocks. This feature releases shortly after the launch of the new North Star season of Siege, which includes the new operator Thunderbird, and it coincides with the launch of Siege on Stadia itself. As soon as it goes live, multiplayer lobbies will pull from those platforms as players search for games.

Ubisoft’s commitment to continually improving Siege doesn’t stop there, though, as the console version of Rainbow Six Siege’s crossplay will be available in Early 2022. It will function slightly differently on consoles and require updates to the UI, which is why it won’t release alongside PC and cloud gaming services. When the feature finally does launch, it will allow players on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S to all play with friends across various consoles. While cross-progression will go across PC, cloud gaming, and consoles, however, crossplay will be limited to console gamers in one group and PC/cloud gaming in the other.

Ubisoft’s decision to keep console crossplay separate is partly due to the input differences between the consoles and PC and the UI functionality that comes with that. Keeping in line with its efforts to release more R6 content and improve functionality, Ubisoft did state it is working on mouse-and-keyboard use for consoles and will be discussing more regarding crossplay in the coming months. In the meantime, Rainbow Six Siege players will have to make do with Season 2 content and knowledge that more is coming.
