Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2 has been praised for the level of detail featured in the game, allowing players to witness everything from realistic weather effects to the aging of its main characters. For instance, players will notice that the playable character’s hair will change in length as time passes, and if they don’t get a haircut it can get fairly long.

Released in 2018, RDR2 is considered a prequel to Rockstar’s widely successful 2010 game Red Dead Redemption. The second installment’s story follows the adventures of Arthur Morgan, one of the main members of the Van der Linde gang, before the gang eventually disintegrates, leading into the events of the first game. Similar to the first game’s protagonist John Marston’s relationship with Dutch Van der Linde, Arthur acts as a surrogate son to the gang leader. But, as players discover, things take a turn as Dutch’s antics become more erratic.

Red Dead Redemption 2 offers players a lot of variety and choice when it comes to customizing Arthur’s looks. Countless outfits can be unlocked by progressing in the game, while others can be purchased at in-game stores. But it’s not only the character’s clothes that can change; so can his hairstyle. Players can select Arthur’s ‘do at a barber, or alternatively, they can let it grow out, as his hair and beard will get longer as the days go by in the game.

How Long It Takes Arthur’s Hair & Beard To Grow In RDR2

This begs the question how long it takes Arthur’s hair to grow out fully in the game. One Reddit user posed this exact question several years ago. Many of the answers noted that Arthur’s hair reaches max length at the end of Red Dead Redemption 2’s Chapter Three or beginning of Chapter Four, so long as the player doesn’t opt for a haircut. One commenter had a more specific answer. “Guide says it takes 20 in game days for hair to get from shortest to longest length,” @kornflakes1989 wrote. However, they warned Arthur’s hair doesn’t grow in real time. Rather, players will have to prompt a loading screen in order for it to progress. “Your hair also won’t visibly reach the next length until you sleep, fast travel, respawn, or anything else that does a screenfade,” they explained.

Players don’t necessarily need to wait for twenty days to pass in Red Dead Redemption 2 to see Arthur’s hair transformation. It’s possible to use hair tonic to make his hair grow longer over a shorter period of time. Each dose of hair tonic doubles the rate of growth of Arthur’s hair, and, as IGN explains, this rate stacks. So, if players use two bottles of hair tonic, it will make Arthur’s locks grow four times faster.

The publication adds that hair tonic is required to get to the maximum length. Hair length in RDR2 is measured on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the longest. However, Arthur’s hair and beard can only grow to level seven naturally over time. Hair tonic is required to reach the maximum level. It takes approximately two weeks in-game to get to levels eight and nine. Level ten takes more time, requiring three weeks of in-game time following the consumption of a hair tonic.

It’s not only Arthur’s hair that will grow in-game. Players can also watch John Marston’s locks grow luscious and long in the epilogue, should they choose. Then again, with the variety of fun hairstyles available in Red Dead Redemption 2, it may be too tempting to hit up a barbershop.
