Morimasa Sato, the game director for Resident Evil Village, revealed in an interview that the deeds of Chris Redfield and Albert Wesker may be more famous throughout the world of Resident Evil than some might think. Sato was previously a game designer for Resident Evil 7, so he was already familiar with the history and characters of Resident Evil before directing RE Village.

While long-time players of Resident Evil may know Chris Redfield as a recurring protagonist intent on stopping global infections perpetrated by evil organizations, those who only played RE Village may not be familiar with Albert Wesker. The latter was a recurring antagonist in the early Resident Evil games who researched and developed viruses as bioweapons. Redfield was able to stop Wesker for good in the final fight of Resident Evil 5 on top of an active volcano. During the fight, however, Redfield hilariously pushed and punched a boulder into the volcano, allowing his partner at the time, Sheva Alomar, to escape from Wesker.

In an interview with Polygon published on June 12, Resident Evil Village director Morimasa Sato answered a number of lingering questions about the game, one of which relates to knowledge of Chris Redfield and Albert Wesker’s fight from RE 5. Karl Heisenberg, a member of the Four Lords in RE Village, refers to Redfield as a “boulder-punching a–hole” during a boss fight. When asked how Heisenberg knows about an incident in the world only thought to be infamous among players, Sato responded that the line is simply “a bit of fan service” before adding, “I’d like to believe that the battle between Albert Wesker and Chris Redfield is something fairly well-known in that universe.” Sato notes that Heisenberg also knows about Ethan and the BSAA through Duke, a helpful merchant in the game, so “it’s quite possible” that Heisenberg learned about Chris through Duke.

Given Sato’s status as the director for Resident Evil Village, his words hold some weight on the canon in the Resident Evil universe. His response to the question of how Heisenberg knows about Redfield punching a boulder still lacks a definitive answer, though. Sato initially brushes it off as fan service, but then says he personally believes Wesker and Chris are famous in Resident Evil. That answer lacks a definitive claim that they are, in fact, famous – which is quite clever on Sato’s part. Since his personal belief could arguably hold more weight than others, fans could lean toward his belief. But if someone else felt differently, that person could argue that he didn’t declare that they were famous, only that he liked to believe they were, and that it was only fan service anyway. The answer of how Heisenberg knows about Redfield’s boulder-punching is clearer but still uncertain.

Regardless, the line remains a hilarious nod to fans of the franchise. Resident Evil 5 released in 2009, so players who have become fans of Resident Evil since then and haven’t played the previous installment may not understand the significance. They too, however, may get a laugh at the thought that Redfield is somehow known for punching boulders. The simple line is an example of the charm the Resident Evil developers at Capcom sprinkled throughout the newest iteration of Resident Evil – a game accessible to both newcomers and fans of old.

Resident Evil Village is available now on PS 4, PS 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Stadia.
