The first image of Olivia Cooke (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) as female lead Samantha Evelyn Cook aka. Art3mis in Ready Player One has arrived. Based on the popular dystopian novel of the same name by author Ernest Cline (who also co-wrote the script for the film adaptation), Ready Player One will see director Steven Spielberg explore an imagined 2044 ruled by VR technology and video game mechanics.

Starring Tye Sheridan (X-Men: Apocalypse) as Wade Owen Watts aka. Parzival, Ready Player One centers around a video game contest wherein the contestants are forced to compete for the inheritance of the creator of OASIS –  the massive online simulation that serves as the playing ground for the competition. Littered with dozens of pop culture references that served to define Cline’s original novel, the first Ready Player One trailer debuted back at San Diego Comic-Con this year. However, as said teaser did not feature an appearance by Cooke as Art3mis, the photo below is our first look at the character in Spielberg’s adaptation.

Courtesy of Empire, said first look image of Cooke as Art3mis – the central love interest and immediate competition to Sheridan’s Parzival in Ready Player One – is now online (see the screenshot below). Speaking to her own excitement in working with Spielberg on the director’s latest film, Cooke had this to say of the onset atmosphere that she enjoyed while shooting Ready Player One:

“It felt like pure adventure. It was Willy Wonka, it was Indiana Jones. When you’re a kid wanting to be an actor, the idea of working with [Spielberg] sounds absurd. It was surreal.”

Based on her work in Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, Cooke is more than ready to help lead the charge in bringing Ready Player One to life on the big screen. And with the added benefit of the entire production being helmed by Spielberg, fans of Cline’s novel are likely in for a real treat when the new movie finally reaches theaters come March 2018.

Thus far, Spielberg has been fairly forthcoming in regards to his intentions in adapting Cline’s novel for the bug screen, and has assured fans that his Ready Player One movie will be both “faithful” and “an original story.” On that note, here’s to hoping for the very best from Spielberg, Sheridan, Cooke, and company.
