Ready Player One star, Tye Sheridan, recently read the sequel novel and shared his reaction. Written by Ernest Cline and published in 2011, Ready Player One was a novel that focused on Wade Watts, who partook in an online Easter egg hunt through a virtual world known as the OASIS (Ontologically Anthropocentric Sensory Immersive Simulation), which was littered with pop culture references that made the book so appealing to many. The book was a New York Times Best Seller and generated both strong positive and negative reactions from the general public.

The popularity of the book led to a big-budget feature film, directed by the legendary filmmaker himself, Steven Spielberg. Tye Sheridan, who broke out with roles in the films like Tree of Life, Mud, and X-Men: Apocalypse, won the coveted role of Wade Watts in the feature film adaptation. Similar to how Michael Crichton was inspired to write a sequel to the Jurassic Park book after the popularity of the film, Ernest Cline wrote a sequel to Ready Player One shortly after the release of the feature film adaptation. Ready Player Two was released in November 2020, and the film adaptation was reported to be in the early stages of development.

During an interview with THR, Tye Sheridan reveals that he did read the sequel, Ready Player Two, and shares his reaction to it. He said he is a fan of author Ernest Cline and would be interested in reprising his role in a sequel. However, Sheridan currently knows no plans for a sequel being in development and has not been contacted by Warner Bros. Sheridan’s full quote can be read below:

“Yeah, I read [Ready Player Two]. It’s interesting. I love Ernie. I love all the places that he’s able to go and the worlds that he’s able to imagine. So it’s always fun reading his books. And in regard to a sequel of the film, I have no idea where they’re at or what the talks are at the studio. It’s just not up to me.”

Ready Player One was released on March 29, 2018, over the Easter holiday weekend and grossed $137 million domestically, which was below the reported $155 million budget on the film. It was released at a difficult time, as Black Panther was dominating the box-office, A Quiet Place took many by surprise, and Avengers: Infinity War was less than a month away. However, the film did gross $582 million worldwide with a massive opening in China. By all metrics, the film was a box office success.

Sheridan is open to returning, and actress Olivia Cooke is signed on for sequels. It is unlikely Steven Speilberg will return to helm the sequel, however. While currently hard at work on West Side Story, Spielberg passed on directing Indiana Jones 5 and handed it over to James Mangold, so the chances are slim that Spielberg will return to helm the sequel to Ready Player One if it does happen. There are plenty of talented directors who could helm the project, be it for theatrical release or possibly a high-profile HBO Max exclusive film like the upcoming Batgirl.
