Rebel Wilson is a cheerleader heading back to high school in a first-look image for her new comedy Senior Year. Senior Year is Wilson’s latest comedy venture, this time exclusively for Netflix. Wilson is starring in and producing the film, which co-stars Alicia Silverstone, Justin Hartley, Angourie Rice, Sam Richardson, Zoë Chao, Mary Holland, and Chris Parnell. Today, Netflix and Wilson announced the release date for Senior Year, as well as revealing the first official image from the film. Wilson championed the upcoming comedy, saying that Senior Year is “like the wildly funny love child of Bring It On and Never Been Kissed.” The Netflix original film will be released on May 13th, 2022, which follows Wilson’s cheerleader character who “falls off a pyramid and into a 20 year coma, she wakes up as a 37-year-old woman, ready to return to high school, regain her status and claim the prom queen crown that eluded her.” Check out Wilson’s Insta post below:

Bring it On is the popular cheer franchise series that originally starred Kirsten Dunst, but went on to spawn a number of sequels, most of them straight to video/streaming. Never Been Kissed is the Drew Barrymore comedy that had her character return to high school as an undercover reporter. Wilson’s last comedy was The Hustle, a remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels with Anne Hathaway, and she’s next slated to star in the drama The Almond and The Seahorse with Charlotte Gainsbourg.

Wilson has made a career of her raunchy-style comedy, capitalizing on the love for throwback comedies and modern-day takes, with movies like Isn’t It Romantic, The Hustle, and The Brothers Grimsby. She’s changed considerably from her “Fat Amy” days in Pitch Perfect, yet retained her comedic chops and sensibilities. A trailer is surely not far behind for Senior Year, which looks and sounds to be a winning formula for the actress and a potential big hit for Netflix.
