Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption II has wowed the gaming industry on many fronts, especially with its impressive models, textures, and artistic direction, but ray tracing and an 8K resolution takes the game to the next level. Realism is one of the things the game is most well known for, largely due to the incredible detail and attention given to things such as world design and historical accuracy.

Red Dead Redemption II follows the story of Arthur Morgan and the dangerous gang he travels with as they attempt to keep their way of life alive in the face of industrialization and urbanization in the west. The game features tons of western action and lawlessness, incorporating themes of family, brotherhood, and friendship along the way. Most critics and fans have sung the game’s praises over the past couple of years, and even now, playthroughs continue to reveal the beauty of Rockstar’s masterpiece.

Red Dead Redemption II’s PC release, a year after its initial launch, opened the door to better hardware. Recently, a YouTuber by the name of Digital Dreams ran the game on a beast of a PC with a ray tracing reshade mod. Red Dead Redemption II has never looked so stunning. Its 8K resolution also does wonders for the realism of the game, something that even on Xbox One and PS4 was pretty far beyond what most of the industry is capable of. Digital Dreams’s hardware included Ryzen 9 3900x CPU and a GTX 3090 GPU, some of the highest-end PC components on the market today.

This would not have been feasible if not for the PC version of Red Dead Redemption II. Whenever a game as complex and expansive as this hits PC marketplaces, the gaming community loves to get to work on mods. Games like Skyrim may hold special places in modders’ hearts, but Red Dead Redemption II definitely has its own brilliant mods. Mods like the raytracing reshader give new dimensions to PC games and allow players to experience their favorite games in new and exciting ways.

It’s these mods that help keep players on their toes. Even games like Red Dead Redemption II that are largely considered almost perfect by critics have room for interesting mods to switch things up. The beauty of mods is that they’re often supplementary, so they only add to whatever the developers have already managed to do. In the case of Red Dead Redemption II, it’s hard to overshadow what Rockstar has put together, but the ability to run in near-photorealistic 8K is certainly an extra bit of beauty that gamers can appreciate.
