Although it seems like nearly everything has been discovered when it comes to Red Dead Redemption 2, one fan has pointed out yet another unique detail about protagonist Arthur Morgan’s iconic hat. Rockstar’s most recent release came out back in 2018, but players are still passionately dissecting both the game’s single-player and online multiplayer modes.

The highly-acclaimed Red Dead Redemption 2 is filled with small details that fans are still getting surprised by more than three years after its release. The massive open world of the game has been meticulously crafted, with a diverse assortment of different biomes and side activities for players to sink their teeth into. This attention to detail is not exclusive to exploration or open-world structure, however, as Red Dead Redemption 2 has received no shortage of praise for its dramatic narrative and deep character development. This greatly applies to the game’s central character Arthur Morgan, who won over many in the gaming community due to his moral ambiguity, sentimentality, and troubled upbringing.

Even more light has been shed on Arthur Morgan thanks to particularly perceptive Red Dead Redemption fan GTA5_RAM on Reddit. In Red Dead Redemption 2‘s camp, players can observe a picture of Arthur’s father Lyle above his bed. As GTA5_RAM points out, Lyle is shown to be wearing the same hat that Arthur Morgan begins the game with.

It’s clear that plenty of effort went into making Arthur Morgan a robust, complex character, so it’s unlikely that this detail is a mere coincidence or an oversight on Rockstar’s part. Having said that, it is interesting that Arthur has held onto his father’s hat, as he writes in his journal that his father would beat him, expressing a general sense of resentment towards the man. Arthur’s character throughout Red Dead Redemption 2 is defined by conflict and internal struggle, so him harboring complicated or contradictory feelings towards his father certainly lines up with the rest of his behavior.

It’s well-known that Red Dead Redemption 2 is a sad game, and this detail might make it even sadder in the eyes of many fans. That’s not to say that this is a bad thing, however; while Rockstar’s other flagship property Grand Theft Auto is satirical and comedic in nature, the Red Dead Redemption games serve up significantly darker, more contemplative material. The complex and mature character development of the game is a major part of this material, so there’s no doubt that this detail will be appreciated by many Red Dead Redemption 2 players.
