Red Dead Redemption 2 VR Mod Is New Best Way To Play In First-Person

A Red Dead Redemption 2 VR mod that lets players immerse themselves deeper in first-person mode is now available to try. The VR mod was created by the same developer as Grand Theft AutoV‘s VR mod, both of which allow the traditionally non-VR games to be played with virtual reality headsets. Red Dead Redemption 2 has its fair share of mods that build a better experience than the original game. Though the original boats impressive models, textures, and artistic direction, there is plenty more for modders to do (and have done) with Rockstar’s exemplary game. One mod enables photorealistic 8K ray tracing, which completely revolutionizes the visuals of the 2018 sequel, while others transform the world into a persistent one to make it more realistic.

Demonstrated by YouTuber Virtual Reality Oasis, a newly playable VR mod by Luke Ross has just been released. The mod lets players don a virtual reality headset and experience Red Dead Redemption 2 in first-person perspective with full head-tracking. Accessible through Luke Ross’s Patreon for $10 per month, the VR mod can be downloaded and installed on PC. (As with most mods, that means console players are unfortunately out of luck.)

Accessing Ross’s Patreon is the only legitimate way to download the VR mod, and it also includes exclusive guides on how to properly install and load the files. The mod is fairly resource-intensive, though, and can probably only run on higher-end gaming PCs. Additionally, since Red Dead Redemption 2 requires long bouts of travel on horseback, VR play might make even experienced virtual reality connoisseurs dizzy, so playing in short bursts may be necessary for some.

Powerful PCs are needed to prevent obvious lag spikes and latency between actions and in-game performance. The mod is performance-heavy, as are many VR games, which requires a powerful graphics card to run smoothly. The mod currently doesn’t support for VR motion controllers, so regular console controllers or keyboard and mouse are necessary to play Red Dead Redemption 2 in virtual reality. This can take away from the immersion of VR and could also require the player to sit down, depending on their setup.

As the gameplay footage shows, though, the Red Dead Redemption 2 VR mod may be the best new way to play in first-person. It’ll be interesting to see how creator Luke Ross and other continue to iterate upon the novelty of VR in Red Dead Redemption, and it begs the question if Rockstar Games could possibly already be considering VR support for its future blockbuster sandbox games and re-releases.
