A movie and television show based on the Redwall book series from the creator of Over the Garden Wall, Patrick McHale, are currently in development at Netflix. The Redwall books are a popular British children’s fantasy series written by author Brian Jacques. The first book in the series was released in 1986 and the final book came 25 years later in 2011.

The book series follows a courageous group of woodland animals living in what is known as Redwall Abbey, a dwelling in the greater forest area of Mossflower Wood. The animals experience many adventures as they often have to defend themselves and each other from villainous forest creatures. These adventures are detailed throughout the 22 Redwall books that have been released over the years. An impressive 30 million copies have been sold to date.

The success of the series will now continue as both a Redwall movie and television series are in development at Netflix. The film will be based on the very first book ever released in the Redwall series and written by McHale. The television show, described as an “event series,” will focus on and follow the character Martin the Warrior. Netflix recently sealed the deal with publisher Penguin Random House Children’s UK to acquire the rights to the series. Fiction Publisher Ben Horslen says they are looking forward to introducing Redwall to the streaming world:

These perennially popular stories have been etched onto the hearts of millions of readers, and we are thrilled to partner with Netflix to bring those beloved characters on screen for families worldwide to enjoy.

Netflix also shared a first look at some visual development art for Redwall:

The upcoming Redwall movie will be the first film to ever be made from any of Jacques’ works and will join Netflix’s steadily growing collection of original animated content. Unfortunately, Jacques is not here to see this all happening. He passed away in 2011 before the final book in the series was released. However, Alan Ingram from The Redwall Abbey Company believes Jacques would have been delighted and grateful that Netflix is bringing his stories to life, saying “Brian would have been very happy to see that Netflix shares his joy and desire to bring his stories to life as a new universe of films, series and potentially much more for audiences of all ages to enjoy.

The Redwall book series is one that is full of adventure, so it makes sense to have both a movie and television show to share those stories. Having McHale as the writer on the film also makes sense, as his 2014 miniseries Over the Garden Wall followed the journey of two characters who had a forest adventure of their own. McHale’s work on the miniseries was met with high ratings and positive reception, so it would appear Redwall is in good hands. As Netflix’s library of animated children’s originals continues to grow, kids today may have more opportunities to see books of the past come to life onscreen.
