Reese Witherspoon has provided fans with an update regarding progress on her return as Elle Woods in Legally Blonde 3. Witherspoon made her debut in the original 2001 Legally Blonde based on Amanda Brown’s novel of the same name, playing a sorority girl who attempts to win back her ex-boyfriend by getting into Harvard Law School. Grossing over $141 million in worldwide box office, the film’s success not only spawned the 2003 sequel Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde, but also a direct-to-DVD spinoff film Legally Blondes, and a stage musical.

Back in May last year it was announced that a third Legally Blonde film starring Witherspoon was in the pipeline, with the script set to be penned by The Office’s Mindy Kaling and Brooklyn Nine-Nine screenwriter Dan Goor. Up until recently, potential story details have been scant, but just last month MGM executive Pamela Abdy confirmed that the film will depict Witherspoon’s character Elle as a mother with a career. It is not yet known whether Witherspoon’s co-star Luke Wilson will return as her on-screen husband Emmett, though producers seem keen for that to happen.

Most recently, Witherspoon spoke with Variety and offered eager fans her own update on the project. Unfortunately for them, the actress admitted she does not know when filming on the Legally Blonde threequel will begin. However, Witherspoon did reveal that she speaks with Kaling about the script “all the time.” Check out her full comments below:

We are just working on the script right now. And when we have a script, we can make a movie. Ask Mindy Kaling! I don’t know, but she and I talk about it all the time.

Given that MGM was originally eyeing a May 2022 release date for Legally Blonde 3, this latest revelation would seem to indicate that the potential release window may now be in serious doubt. Given that Witherspoon suggests that the film’s script has not yet been finalized, let alone having a timeline for photography to begin, it seems increasingly unlikely that the film will be ready for release in as little as six months’ time. Of course, production delays and changing release dates are almost par-for-the-course when it comes to big-name productions such as this, and no doubt the studio will be keen to see the film commence production as soon as it is practical to do so.

Witherspoon’s legion of fans will no doubt be somewhat disappointed to learn that Legally Blonde 3 l is not further along, but would probably appreciate the need for Kaling and Goor to get the script right first. As one of her most memorable and beloved movie roles, fans will expect nothing but the best for Witherspoon’s return to the screen as Elle Woods. In the meantime, while fans are waiting for filming on Legally Blonde 3 to officially get underway, Witherspoon’s next outing in the film adaptation of Where the Crawdads Sing is set for release in June next year.
