Reese Witherspoon posted a hilarious meme of herself on Instagram that sums up how many are feeling eight months into the devastation that is 2020. The Oscar-winning actress, business-owner, and author has been a staple in Hollywood since the late ’90s. Although she may be best known for portraying the bubbly Elle Woods in Legally Blonde, Witherspoon has played many iconic characters in both movies and TV. Her roles range from rom-coms to dramas to biopics, including one of her most famous movies, Walk the Line, where she played June Carter Cash.

Witherspoon is now more successful than ever, both acting in and producing several shows and movies in just the last few years. These include Apple TV+’s The Morning Show and Hulu’s Little Fires Everywhere adaptation. Witherspoon will also reprise her Elle Woods role in Legally Blonde 3, which will be co-written by her A Wrinkle in Time co-star Mindy Kaling. The most recent film in the series released almost 20 years ago, so many are looking forward to the upcoming movie.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Witherspoon’s meme, which she shared on Instagram, outlines each month of 2020 so far, with a picture of a Witherspoon character representing each one. January starts on a positive note, with the smiling, neon-pink Elle demonstrating how optimistic things were at the start of the year. However, the meme quickly becomes darker, including more serious Witherspoon characters and ending with the same four images of Wild‘s Cheryl to express how bewildered everyone is at the state of the world currently. The meme also includes a prediction as to how September will go, which perhaps doesn’t bode well. Check out Witherspoon’s post below:

Yup. #2020

It’s impressive how well each of the characters works for a given time frame. Witherspoon’s Little Fires Everywhere character Elena knows how to express irritated disappointment better than anyone, and that’s exactly how the world was feeling in February. When March hit, the COVID-19 pandemic became a reality, making the wide-eyed horror of Witherspoon’s Madeline Mackenzie in Big Little Lies the perfect fit. Meanwhile, all were deep in quarantine during April and May, so Alice Kinney sobbing in front of the mirror in Home Again is a good representation of that time.

Witherspoon is no stranger to poking fun at herself or using memes — in July, she posted a Legally Blonde one to encourage people to wear masks. This particular meme is an undeniably hilarious depiction of the roller coaster of 2020, and other celebrities are catching on. Kaling posted a similar meme with her own images, as did Hoda Kotb, Witherspoon’s Little Fires Everywhere co-star Kerry Washington, and model Cara Delevingne. Reese Witherspoon may have unwittingly started a new 2020 challenge, and it will be fun to see if more celebrities make their own versions of this meme soon.
