E! has announced an intriguing new reality TV show called Relatively Famous: Ranch Rules where the children of celebrities work on a ranch to prove themselves and help get the ranch back open after being closed because of the pandemic. The show looks to be somewhat of a rehash of the hit reality TV show The Simple Life, which starred Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie and made a big splash in the mid-2000s.

Similar to Relatively Famous: Ranch Rules, the conceit of The Simple Life was that privileged rich kids prove and/or embarrass themselves doing “real people work.” Like the cast of Relatively Famous, Paris and Nicole were also children of celebrities. The biggest difference seems to be the number of cast members and that they will be working on one project instead of traveling to different work spaces like Paris and Nicole. The Simple Life was so popular it was picked up by E! after it was initially cancelled by Fox, it lasted five seasons, and even spawned 12 different international remakes.

On Monday, E! News introduced the show, explaining that it will star eight children of celebrities who will venture out of Hollywood to a working ranch in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. “There, they’ll take on a series of outrageous, messy and challenging jobs in an attempt to prove they’re more than just their famous last names, and, more importantly, try and reopen the ranch after a year of shutdown and loss due to the pandemic,” E! News wrote. The show promises to feature both the cast bonding over shared experiences of having famous parents, as well as drama between cast members. On Wednesday, Jan. 12, the show will premiere with two-back-to-back episodes from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m.

E! News also announced the eight cast members. There’s Hana Giraldo, daughter of rock icons Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo, who is described as a musician with thick skin that is single and ready to mingle. Next is Austin Gunn, a professional wrestler and son of wrestler Billy Gunn. He’s said to want to be at the center of the action and strike up a romance with one of the ranch hands. Then there’s Taylor “Tay” Hasselhoff, daughter of actor David Hasselhoff, who is said to be an “impossibly down to earth” real estate agent. Next is Jasmin Lawrence, daughter of actor Martin Lawrence, who, as the oldest, is said to be the mom of the group. There’s also Myles O’Neal, son of NBA star Shaquille O’Neal, who is said to have a big personality. Next is Redmond Parker, son of musician Ray Parker Jr., who is an entrepeneur, and Harry James Thornton, son of actor Billy Bob Thornton, who works as a prop master. Lastly, there’s Ebie, daughter of rapper Eazy-E, who is said to have a rocky start on the ranch and trouble doing the messier tasks.

Could Relatively Famous: Ranch Rulesbe The Simple Life made for Gen Z? It’s unclear whether this reality formula will appeal to a new generation, but it has a lot of promise. The formula is easily replicated simply by getting new celebrity children and there’s plenty of promise for reunions, much like MTV’s The Real World. The biggest determinant of whether this show will be a success will be whether people find the cast charmingly hilarious or just obnoxiously privileged.
