Reservoir Dogs’ Mr. Blonde actor Michael Madsen revisits his most famous scene by cutting of his family’s ears in quarantine. Released in 1992, Reservoir Dogs launched the career of writer-director Quentin Tarantino while helping boost the profiles of everyone in its cast of memorable performers.

The ensemble for Tarantino’s film was indeed loaded with talented actors, including Steve Buscemi, Tim Roth, Harvey Keitel and Lawrence Tierney. And then there was Madsen. Already well-known after roles in everything from The Natural to Thelma & Louise to The Doors, Madsen would be catapulted to near-iconic status after his performance as the brutal psychopath Mr. Blonde aka Vic Vega in Tarantino’s crime opus. One scene in particular, the ear-cutting scene scored with the song “Stuck in the Middle With You” by Stealers Wheel, would earn a place in movie lore as one of the most famous moments of sadistic violence ever.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Almost thirty years after he was vaulted into movie history by Reservoir Dogs, Madsen has revisited the famous ear-cutting scene with a coronavirus quarantine video co-starring his family. In the clip, Madsen’s wife and kids are seen looking very glum with bandages over their ears. What happened to them? The punchline comes when Madsen himself appears, decked out in half a Mr. Blonde costume, performing the dance he made famous in Tarantino’s film. See the clip in the space below (via QT8: The First Eight):

Madsen’s video ends with an appeal for folks to stay home amid the coronavirus lockdown, which is sort of a weird mixed message given the rest of the video depicts Madsen’s family as being very upset to be stuck at home with an apparent psycho who has cut their ears off. Either way, it’s fun to see Madsen revisiting one of his most famous characters all these many years later. It’s also nice to see his dancing skills haven’t improved.

Of course, at one time Tarantino himself talked about bringing Madsen’s Vic Vega back for an actual movie pairing him with his brother Vincent Vega, the character John Travolta played so memorably in Pulp Fiction (given both Vega brothers die in their respective films, the movie would have been a prequel showing their younger days). But, like so many other promised Tarantino projects, the movie never came to fruition. Now the prospects of a Vega Brothers movie seem very dim indeed, unless Tarantino wants to cast different actors in the roles of Vic and Vincent.

Even if Vic Vega never returns to screens, he already had his moment in Reservoir Dogs, and it’s a moment that still resonates with a lot of people. When it comes to coronavirus lockdown content from famous people, Madsen’s brief reprise of the Vega role is definitely less cringe-worthy and more fun than most, as it seems pretty spontaneous (instead of being lame and calculated like a lot of other stuff celebrities have done to keep themselves relevant while the world is on hold).
