Capcom confirms that 2019’s Resident Evil 2 will include Leon and Claire’s classic costumes for free. Although both characters are back at the center of Resident Evil 2 and can sport a variety of different looks throughout the game, developers are paying tribute to the original game.

Coming to consoles early next year, developers are retelling the story of Resident Evil 2 from 1998. Breaking out of the confines of the Spencer Mansion, Resident Evil 2 took the hordes of undead monsters into Racoon City and focused on a new crop of characters. Although Leon and Claire have become staples of the ongoing Resident Evil series, Capcom is going back to the start of their story and making a few tweaks.

The official Resident Evil Games Twitter told gamers that they will be rewarded for their support with the classic Leon and Claire costumes being unlockable in-game for free. While it is a positive step and likely to appeal to fans who’ve ever played the original, it also raises a concern over microtransactions in-game. If the classic costumes are free, it implies that players might have to part with their cash for others.

There are no further details on how the Leon and Claire costumes will be unlocked for free. Whether their unlock is based on progression or through a different style of gameplay, everyone will have to wait to find out more. Elsewhere, it’s important to remember that this year’s Sony-exclusive Spider-Man had nearly 30 suits that could be unlocked throughout the game without the use of microtransactions.

Capcom has already teased (via YouTube) that the Deluxe Edition of Resident Evil 2 will include a whole wardrobe of different costumes. As well as a Walking Dead-inspired sheriff’s outfit for Leon, Claire can also slip into an Elza Walker biker costume. For those who don’t know, Elza Walker was a planned character from the undeveloped Resident Evil 1.5 who was eventually amalgamated into Claire’s character.

Capcom has already asked fans not to call Resident Evil 2 a remake, referring to the game as more of a reimagining. The footage that’s already been shown has showcased a new look for all the main characters and a completely new design for Ada Wong. As it stands, Leon will start 2019’s Resident Evil 2 wearing a Raccoon City police vest that isn’t too dissimilar to his 1998 design, while Claire is wearing a very different red leather jacket.

Some free costumes that are presumably just cosmetic may not seem like a big deal when it comes to Resident Evil 2, but it’s just another way that Capcom is honoring the original. For those who want a taste of nostalgia, it’s great news that they can play as ‘classic’ Leon and Claire. The characters will return to the horror of the zombie apocalypse when Resident Evil 2 hits Windows PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 at the start of next year.
