The trailer for Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City revealed a lot of easter egg nods to the video games, but one such reference might already be teasing the villains of the next entry. The Resident Evil movie series fronted by Milla Jovovich currently stands as the most successful video game adaptations, with the six films collectively grossing over $1 billion worldwide. Despite featuring creatures and characters from the games, they were disliked by some fans for having little to do with the source material.

The upcoming Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City is a reboot with no links to the Jovovich movies. Instead, the movie will combine the storylines of the first two games, with one part split between the Umbrella mansion incident from Resident Evil and the other being the RPD siege from the sequel. Characters like Chris and Claire Redfield, Jill Valentine, Leon Kennedy and many more will appear, alongside monsters like the Licker and Lisa Trevor.

The trailers for Welcome To Raccoon City show that the reboot will be very faithful to the source material, from the locales down to the costumes. The trailer is also loaded with easter eggs, including a moment where Claire and Leon look at an old film reel. The Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City trailer shows Umbrella scientist William Birkin observing two creepy children pulling the wings off a struggling dragonfly. Fans of the games will recognize this eerie moment from Resident Evil – Code: Veronica, with the twins in question being the villains of that entry, Alexander and Alexia Ashford.

A shot also shows the film reel is labeled “Ashford Twins,” confirming it really is them. Director Johannes Roberts has revealed he was a fan of that scene from the game so he wanted to include it in Welcome To Raccoon City, but it’s possible it also teases the antagonists of a possible sequel too. Since the Resident Evil reboot is tackling two stories it’s doubtful it will deal with the Ashfords in any meaningful way, but once the Raccoon City storyline is done, an adaptation of Code: Veronica is possible.

In Resident Evil – Code: Veronica, the Ashford twins were a pair of unnaturally close siblings who were responsible for the creation of the t-Veronica virus. The story saw Claire arrive on their remote island in search of her missing brother Chris – who in turn later arrives to rescue her from the Ashfords. While not considered one of the best entries, Code: Veronica is still well-regarded among fans, and is very much in the survival horror vein. The horror-focused Welcome To Raccoon City is clearly meant to launch a new series, so it’s smart to leave plot threads dangling that a later entry can explore. The Ashfords would make great villains in a future sequel, but time will tell if Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City receives a warm enough reception for a follow-up to happen.
