According to a notable leaker, Capcom is currently developing a PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S patch that will provide Resident Evil 7 players with a next-gen upgrade. Resident Evil has been the talk of the town of late. Just yesterday, the publisher hosted Resident Evil Showcase, an online event where fans were treated to several new announcements and more.

The brief showcase most notably included the long-awaited reveal of Resident Evil Village’s release date. Fans can expect to experience Ethan Winters’ next horror-filled adventure on May 7 of this year. In addition, Capcom used the event to unveil a brand-new story trailer and RE Village’s first bit of gameplay footage. Details about the game’s multiplayer component, demo releases, and special editions were disclosed, as well. However, it appears the publisher didn’t show all of its cards at once.

In a recent Twitter post, leaker Dusk Golem claimed a next-gen patch for Resident Evil 7 is “100% happening.” What the update may add to the experience on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S remains unclear, but Dusk Golem noted that even they’re uncertain as to why Capcom neglected to mention the patch during Resident Evil Showcase. The leaker additionally alleged that Resident Evil 7-like VR functionality was in development “at some point” for RE Village. However, Dusk Golem knows nothing about the VR version’s current status at present.

Resident Evil 7 definitely seems like it could benefit from a patch that enables 4K resolution and a smooth 60FPS on Microsoft’s and Sony’s latest hardware. The horror title is already stunning as is, horrifically so in some cases, but the tech wizards behind Capcom’s RE Engine are bound to have unearthed new ways to further elevate the experience.

Players won’t have to wait long to see RE Engine in action on the new consoles, since Resident Evil Village is out in just a few months’ time. Plus, PS5 owners can currently download an exclusive Maiden demo – a tense visual and audio showpiece of what Capcom has in store for the franchise’s forthcoming entry. A separate demo is expected to release across all platforms on an unspecified date this spring, though concrete information remains scarce as of writing.
