Chris and Claire Redfield’s distinctive “Made In Heaven” jackets in the Resident Evil series are nods to Queen. The original Resident Evil began development as a remake of Capcom’s own 1989 horror game Sweet Home, which was a movie tie-in. Sweet Home pioneered many of the mechanics that became survival horror mainstays, including the story unfolding through diary text, puzzle solving, and limited inventories. This remake evolved into Resident Evil – AKA Biohazard – during development, with ghosts being replaced by zombies and other b-movie creatures like giant spiders.

Resident Evil became a surprise smash worldwide, with 1998’s Resident Evil 2 being even bigger. It’s now an iconic series that is still running today, with remakes of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 being the most recent entries. It’s spawned live-action movies starring Milla Jovovich, anime films, toys, comics and even energy drinks. Like any long-running series it’s had its ups and downs, but it always finds a way to reinvent itself for new generations.

Chris Redfield was one of the main characters in the first Resident Evil and he’s reappeared in many subsequent sequels. His sister Claire was added to Resident Evil 2 to provide a link to the original, and she’s since become a fan favorite character too. One of Chris’ unlockable costumes in the original game is a sweet brown jacket with angel artwork on the back, emblazoned with the name “Made In Heaven.” Claire’s biker gear in the second game has the same design, with Chris’ jacket being seen in the S.T.A.R.S office as an easter egg.

What some fans may not realize is that Chris and Claire Redfield’s “Made In Heaven” jackets are a nod to the Queen album and song of the same name. This 1995 Queen album is the final to feature Freddie Mercury, with the song itself originally coming from the singer’s solo album Mr. Bad Guy. It appears someone on the development team is a huge fan of Queen and this particular album, as not only does “Made In Heaven” recur throughout the Resident Evil series, so do Queen references.

Claire’s alternate Resident Evil 2 costume is a jacket labeled with “Let Me Live,” another single from Made In Heaven, and this design returned for Resident Evil: CODE VERONICA. “Mother Love” is yet another track from the same album and is seen tattooed on Billy Coen’s arm in Resident Evil 0, while “My Life Has Been Saved” is part of Leon’s inventory screen in Resident Evil 4. “Made In Heaven” made a return for the 2019 remake of the second Resident Evil game, with a redesign for Claire’s new leather jacket.
