While keys are nothing new to the Resident Evil franchise, they have never been easy to find or easily explained. Even when players do find them, it isn’t always explained what doors the key can be used on or the actual importance of the key itself.

Exploring Castle Dimitrescu and all of its secrets requires players to obtain multiple keys throughout the game. Some of these are given to you during story progression and others need to be found by exploring every nook and cranny within the village. One of those very important keys is the Courtyard key. Here’s how to find it and what it opens.

How To Find The Courtyard Key In Resident Evil Village

After making their way through the castle early on in the game, players will encounter Lady Dimitrescu and her three daughters. After fighting and defeating the first daughter, Ethan will find a beautifully decorated wine bottle, the Sanguine Virginis (maiden’s blood). Now take that bottle of wine and head for the wine room at the top of the stairs on the second floor of the main hall.

Once inside the wine room, head to the back and look for a silver placeholder of some sort that can be interacted with. Interact with the piece, and players will be able to place the Sanguine Virginis in the placeholder. With the object in place, the mechanism will be weighed down and the wall will open up revealing a small treasure box. Inside is the sought-after Courtyard key.

The courtyard key itself is required to open multiple doors around the courtyard, which is located directly in front of the dining room area. Players will need to use the courtyard key to unlock the courtyard as well as important doors in the vicinity. Players can use the key as many times as they want until the story no longer requires players to have it in their inventory.

Resident Evil: Village has many different puzzles, locked doors, and secrets hiding within the world. Finding all of these secrets and clues requires multiple keys and the courtyard key is no different. Considering players obtain this key after a pivotal point in the story, it’s hard to miss this one but it’s easy to get lost and end up running in circles trying to find the exact place players need to be, so sticking to the main path will help find this key faster.

Resident Evil: Village is available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia.
