Retro-Cast: If WandaVision Were Made In The ’90s

With several Emmy nominations for the cast of WandaVision, it’s fair to say that these actors played a huge role in pulling off this ambitious MCU story. Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany really shined in their roles and there were a lot of familiar and new faces joining them for the series.

But as good as the cast was, it’s fun to imagine what WandaVision might look like in another era. If it were made in the 90s, which stars of that time could have done these characters justice and told one of Marvel’s strangest stories yet?

9 Ralph Bohner: Seann William Scott

The inclusion of Evan Peters as Quicksilver in this MCU show was a huge surprise to fans even if it didn’t have as big of an impact as expected. Though Quicksilver only turned out to be Ralph Bohner, he was a funny, slacker character with a goofy personality that added some fun to the show.

Seann William Scott began making a name for himself in 90s comedies like American Pie. He excelled at playing the obnoxious and immature goofballs. He is the kind of actor who could steal a few scenes in a small supporting role like this.

8 Billy & Tommy Maximoff: Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen

The arrival of Billy and Tommy in Wanda’s life was a game-changer for her as they represented happiness and something worth fighting for. They also served as the typical precocious sitcom kids and eventually developed into heroes themselves by the series’ end.

Along with the fun casting of Elizabeth Olsen’s older sisters, the Olsen twins would have been an ideal fit for this show. Mary-Kate and Ashley had been sitcom stars since they were toddlers and were child icons in the 90s. They could have played the adorable youngster roles easily and it would have been fun to see them as superheroes.

7 Director Hayward: Christopher MacDonald

Though there were a lot of threats to deal with in WandaVision, probably the most unlikable antagonists was Director Hayward. He initially seemed like a good guy, overseeing the SWORD operations, but soon showed he was willing to kill Wanda in order to cover up his own crimes.

Christopher MacDonald seemed to be the 90s’ go-to actor for playing the sleazy villains like this. In movies like Happy Gilmore, MacDonald was so good at playing those totally detestable jerks that audiences wanted to see get their comeuppance.

6 Jimmy Woo: B.D. Wong

Though he was sort of a bumbling lawman in Ant-Man and the Wasp, Jimmy Woo (Randall Park) was much more impressive when he was reintroduced in WandaVision. His goofiness gave him an endearing quality. But he also proved he was intelligent and brave when the situation called for action.

B.D. Wong is a very versatile actor whose range can be seen in a number of big projects in the 90s. He could play the hero in movies like Executive Decision, be funny in Father of the Bride, and play the intellect in Jurassic Park. All these qualities could combine to play Jimmy Woo effectively.

5 Darcy Lewis: Rosie Perez

Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) was not a popular character with all MCU fans as some found her an annoying character in the Thor movies. But she found redemption in WandaVision, bringing her spark of sassy energy while also being a fun audience surrogate.

Rosie Perez found her breakout role in Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing and continued to find success in the 90s with a number of acclaimed performances. In every role, she was a funny, charming presence who took over every scene with her energy.

4 Monica Rambeau: Halle Berry

Though MCU fans initially met young Monica Rambeau in Captain Marvel, WandaVision reintroduced her as an adult who was ready to become her own hero. Teyonah Parris did a great job of playing Monica under Wanda’s spell as Geraldine before showing her as her true badass self.

Halle Berry was still on her way to becoming a superstar and Oscar-winner in the 90s. She took on a variety of projects that showed off her dramatic skills, her comedic side, and also a few that allowed her to be the action star.

3 Agatha Harkness: Joan Cusack

As soon as Agnes was introduced, fans began speculating about her true intentions and identity. Many correctly guessed that she was the villainous Agatha Harkness who was influencing Wanda all along. Kathryn Hahn was amazing as both the sitcom neighbor and the dangerous villain.

Joan Cusack is a terrific character actor who delivered endless great performances in the 90s. She was often cast in supporting roles as the best friend where she would steal the show, but her performance in Arlington Road proved she could be the chilling baddie as well.

2 Vision: Colin Firth

Though Paul Bettany was always great as Vision, this show really allowed him to have some fun with the character for once. The sitcom setting gave Vision the opportunity to be funny and charming while also having a sorrowfulness about him as he learns more about his reality.

Colin Firth is one of those actors who is effortlessly charming in all his roles. While it is strange to imagine him painted up in red and green, there is no doubt Firth could excel at the humor and romantic aspects of Vision as well as his tragic moments.

1 Wanda Maximoff: Sarah Michelle Gellar

Elizabeth Olsen is another actor who did great work in the MCU before WandaVision but then gave such an amazing performance when allowed to explore the complexities of Wanda Maximoff. Olsen was as brilliant in the broad sitcom moments as she was in the intimate and sad moments.

Sarah Michelle Gellar was one of the most beloved heroes of the 90s thanks to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Gellar was always able to ground the show’s fantastical elements with humor and humanity which is also needed in a show like WandaVision.
