Rian Johnson’s acclaimed sci-fi thriller Looper is getting a 4K Ultra-HD re-release from Sony Pictures in time for its tenth anniversary. Written and directed by Johnson, the film is set in a world in which crime syndicates in the future have discovered time-travel technology and use it to send targets back to the near future of 2044 for termination by contract killers known as loopers, who retire when they kill the future versions of themselves. When one killer, Joe, has his older version escape, he goes on the run to hunt down his older version before the crime syndicate kills him.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis lead the cast of Looper as Joe and Old Joe alongside Emily Blunt, Jeff Daniels, Noah Segan, Piper Perabo, Paul Dano and Garret Dillahunt. Hitting theaters in late 2012, the film was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $176 million against its $30 million budget and landing on multiple top ten lists for the year. While audiences are currently eager for the return of Johnson’s Knives Out franchise, fans of the filmmaker have something else to look forward to in the near future.

Looper marked an interesting step forward in Johnson’s career towards more action-driven efforts after his indie directorial debut Brick and modestly budgeted caper comedy The Brothers Bloom. Following the success of the film, Johnson would later return to the director’s chair for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, his second sci-fi genre project and the most divisive in the franchise, with critics praising it for its subversive twists on the franchise’s formula while audiences were largely opposed for said diversions. Johnson was set to write and direct a new Star Wars trilogy for Lucasfilm, though recent reports seem to indicate the films have been shelved due to creative differences between the two.

Rian Johnson’s Looper also continued the filmmaker’s partnership with stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Noah Segan, who have appeared in all of the writer/director’s films in some capacity, though the former primarily in cameo form outside of Brick and Looper. Segan was most recently seen in Johnson’s Knives Out while Gordon-Levitt was only heard in cameo form, though with Segan teasing his return for Knives Out 2, some are hopeful to see the Looper trio reunite for the next chapter in the murder mystery franchise. In the meantime, audiences can look forward to Looper hitting shelves in 4K UHD for the first time on February 15.
