Rick and Morty has taken on plenty of different genres and some of those episodes are actually the most underrated of the series. There’s plenty of other genres for the show to step into in the future.

While some of them may seem like quite an odd fit for the show, there’s plenty of directions that these characters can be taken. Whether it’s a genuine step into the genre or a parody of it, here’s 10 types of film other than science fiction that the show could explore.

10 Western

The western genre has influenced the show in the past, but a full on western flick could be really interesting. Being hunted by an outlaw, Rick and Morty could take on a bit of a sheriff role.

However, in true Rick and Morty fashion it would make even more sense to flip this on its head and have the duo become the outlaws. Currently the western and science fiction genres are mixing well, so it would be interesting to see it in animation.

9 Space Opera

The show is of course a science fiction series, but there’s not been many space opera elements involved. The difference with a space opera is the scale and number of fantasy elements that are woven into the genre itself.

It’s a style that few films have pulled off, but it’s something very accessible for the show. A series finale would be great to see as a space opera to get the grand scale of the events that are unfolding.

8 Horror

There’s been horror and slasher related content before, but never have the duo had to deal with classic tropes such as a haunted house or some kind of ghostly alien. This could be a way to keep the show fresh.

Rick is very rarely scared, but by putting him into a situation where even he feels a little fearful could help develop the characters a little further and put theirs back up against the wall.

7 Sit-Com

The sit-com is a genre that can be used for some kind of bottle episode. The series could benefit from changing up the genre, perhaps even adding a laught track and focusing on the relationships of the family.

Now that the Smiths are back together, all the components are in place for a sit-com episode. Jerry for instance can serve as the comic relief, while Summer is the angsty teen and Rick the wacky granddad.

6 Family Friendly

The show is full of cursing, violence and innuendo. An episode that’s PG rated could actually pose interesting creative challenges for the team. It may actually shift the style of the show.

Having Rick and Morty almost act as if they are children’s presenters, trying to teach science and about the universe, before it all goes horribly wrong and descends into violence and chaos once again, could be pretty fun.

5 Sword And Sandal

The sword and sandal genre doesn’t translate too well anymore, but this show can make anything work. There’s likely a dimension out there that never really evolved past the roman civilization and therefore still operates as such.

Putting the group in this situation would ensure they fulfill completely different roles. They could interfere with history and have them try to develop much faster than normal, causing a lot of issues as a result.

4 Pirate

Space pirates have been done so many times, so its about time that actual pirates are brought into the mix. There’s going to be plenty of water based planets out there.

The space cruiser can turn into a small ship and the team can get involved in some buccaneering adventures. Who knows what the creative team can achieve in this genre.

3 Noir

The noir genre has played into the show before, but it’s always fun to look at some kind of murder mystery and have the group figure out who committed the atrocious crime.

The ongoing joke could of course be that it was really Rick that they were hunting the whole time and that Morty’s detective agency isn’t all that effective therefore.

2 War

The show has briefly touched on war in the past, but the audience has never been taken into the trenches for a whole episode. In fact, it would be interesting to see them take on the one camera shot approach.

Following Rick and Morty as they battle their way through the trenches of whatever conflict they find themselves in, this could be a vastly different approach on the show.

1 Interview

Some of the previous shows that Dan Harmon has worked on employed the interview technique. It’s rarely done in animation so this could be a complete break from the normal.

An investigation into Rick’s crazy adventures could uncover all kinds of truths as the reporter gets whisked away on another high stakes mission involving aliens and weird circumstances. Rick’s interview would probably be pretty brief though.
