There are few better representations of Rick and Morty‘s zany brand of humor than Rick’s avian pal and ex-bandmate, Birdperson. Amidst the array of weird, colorful aliens and ethereal beings inhabiting the boundless R&M universe, this winged being stands out for his solemn demeanor and generally quirky traits.

Outside of the major characters, this reoccurring figure is one of the few to actually come with something of a story arch, as he shifts from humble bird friend to an ominous weapon of the Galactic Federation. Though he hasn’t been prominently featured, he’s still had his share of amusing and memorable quotes since debuting in “Ricksy Business.” So, let’s take off and soar as we explore the ten greatest lines from Birdperson and his nefarious counterpart Phoenixperson.

10 “The Beacon Was Activated. Who Is In Danger?”

In the episode “Ricksy Business,” Rick and Summer decide to let loose and throw a party after Beth and Jerry go on a trip. Naturally, this means viewers will be shown a slew of unique, zany alien characters eager to hang out with the intergalactic partier, Rick.

Among the most memorable is the introduction of Birdperson, who enters the scene in grand fashion with his first-ever line on the show. Much like the figure himself, the quote serves as a cheeky reference to superhero tropes.

9 “I Found It In My Carpet. I Don’t Know What Humans Eat.”

During their desperate attempt to appease the alien heads by “getting schwifty,” Morty pays a visit to Birdperson to aid him in returning to his family. The avian-man attempts to provide hospitality by offering him a plate of food, seemingly setting up a gag involving Morty consuming birdseed.

But, in typical R&M fashion, the punchline is taken one step further with this curveball, revealed by a nonchalant Birdperson. It’s not birdseed, but, in fact, “random debris” found in his carpet. Hey, at least he tried. But, alas, human culture is apparently quite foreign and unknown to bird people…

8 “As A Result, He Has The Power To Save Or Destroy Entire Worlds.”

Being the close friend that he is (or was), it’s perhaps not surprising that “BP” knows much about Rick, even seemingly knowing more than his own family. This trait is largely established by this line in the season two episode, “Get Schwifty.”

Birdperson is able to shed some more light and offer added perspective on the enigma that is Rick. After Morty explains Rick’s rather destructive ways, Birdperson follows it up with this ominous line. He then switches gears and vouches for him by informing him “he’s the reason I’m alive at all.” It’s clear that there is much history and comradery between Birdperson and Rick that’s largely unexplored.

7 “It Is Now ‘PP.'”

There’s something quite amusing about an intimidating cyborg bird villain uttering something you might hear from a young child. Of course, “PP” is supposed to be the abbreviation to Birdperson’s new evil reconstructed form, which is akin to an avian version of Darth Vader.

Still, one can’t help but chuckle at the obvious juvenile overtones here, which is made even funnier by Phoenixperson’s stern, serious delivery.

6 “…Then You Were Always A Bad Friend.”

During the epic climax of the Star Wars-esque “Star Mort Rickturn of the Jerri,” Rick and Phoenixperson are squaring off in an action-packed skirmish. Though it’s mostly meant to a thrilling spectacle, there’s also a tinge of emotion in here as Rick is forced to tangle with his former friend who’s now become a hostile foe.

Even in his new cybernetic form, this bird-turned-phoenix still has a couple of memorable lines he busts out before being defeated. This great rebuttal comes after Rick informs him that he “always wondered who would win if we ever fought.”

5 “The Road Your Father And I Walked Together Is Soaked Deeply With The Blood Of Both Friends And Enemies.”

In the action-filled season two finale “Wedding Squanchers,” the Smith family gets to know Rick’s friends a bit more as they attend a festive wedding. This includes the avian groom himself, Birdperson. At the wedding, Beth tries to converse with this longtime friend of her father, which is met with little success.

Scarcely acknowledging her, he divulges some more of his history with Rick, which was apparently wrought with bloodshed and clashes with the Galactic Federation. Birdperson instantly becomes an even more interesting figure with this eyebrow-raising line, along with his follow-up statements claiming to be “terrorists on the run.”

4 “Tammy, I Was Approaching Infertility When I Met You, But There Is Still Time. I Am Yours Until Your Death.”

Speaking of goofy and endearing moments, there’s plenty of both to be had during the lavish wedding of Birdperson and Summer’s friend Tammy. When prompted to recite their vows, the avian man chimes in with this amusingly to-the-point revelation.

His usual monotone, emotionless delivery sells this chuckle-worthy line even more, as does the unexpected left turn in the plot just after it.

3 “How Often Do You Think You Might Look Up At The Stars And Wonder What Might Have Been Had You Just Put Your Faith In Rick?”

Being in only a handful of episodes, viewers don’t get to see or hear much of this mysterious Birdperson. Regardless, he sure seems to have a way with words judging from the few quotes he does have.

A prime example is this sentimental scene with Morty during the aforementioned episode “Get Schwifty.” Along with revealing more about this odd figure and his history with Rick, Birdperson continues to defend his friend by imploring him to keep faith in him. He does so with these words of wisdom spoken to Morty, who’s ready to abandon Rick.

2 “‘Wubba Lubba Dub Dub’ Means I Am In Great Pain, Please Help Me.”

Along with being a source of bizarre humor, Birdperson tends to be a vehicle for Rick-related revelations with his few stints on the show. The most significant example is a scene where he informs Morty of the true meaning of his grandpa’s seemingly nonsensical catchphrase. What was thought to be a random moment of goofiness turns out to be a pretty dark, character-driven moment.

1 “In Bird Culture, This Is Considered A D*ck Move.”

Every now and then, there are quotes in film and TV that manage to transcend and reach meme status. This usually speaks to the impact and appeal of said quote. Case in point? This delightfully zany line from Birdperson, which has caught on quite a bit among R&M fandom.

Who’d have thought this simple diss to Morty for ditching Rick would become one of the most iconic quotes from R&M? Not only is it hilariously delivered with the dry, “matter of fact” tone, but we also learn a bit more about bird culture in the process, which apparently isn’t so different than human culture…
