The Suicide Squad’s Rick Flag and King Shark are adorable in kid-friendly cosplay. James Gunn’s follow up to David Ayer’s Suicide Squad (2016) sees Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) joined by a handful of obscure villains including Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Peacemaker (John Cena), Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior), Polka-Dot Man (David Dastmalchian), and King Shark (voiced by Sylvester Stallone). Unfortunately for unmentioned members of Task Force X, most of them don’t make it to the film’s title card.

Gunn’s R-rated blockbuster, which takes place in the DC Extended Universe, sees Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) sends Task Force X to the island of Corto Maltese to eliminate all traces of Project Starfish. Paying homage to John Ostrander’s comic, Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is infused with the writer/director’s signature irreverence and heart—from the once-subordinate soldier who suddenly has a personality to an anthropomorphic great white who views everyone as “nom-noms” until making a friend. Where 2016’s Suicide Squad was criticized for taking itself too seriously, The Suicide Squad’s playful tone makes it easy to fall in love with its characters.

As seen in the photos above, Flag’s appearance in The Suicide Squad is much sillier than in its predecessor. This time around he sports a motivational yellow t-shirt, a “SKWAD” tattoo, and dislikes the term “suicide squad.”  In Suicide Squad, he felt very much like a secondary character. In Gunn’s film, he feels like a real leader and contributes to what is arguably the movie’s most emotional moment in his fight with Peacemaker. As for King Shark, the large and dimwitted descendant of an ancient shark god is one of Task Force X’s most endearing characters, especially when he’s wearing a fake mustache.

The Suicide Squad has captured the hearts of audiences everywhere and will likely inspire droves of cosplays and Halloween costumes this year—from Harley Quinn to Weasel. Despite disappointing at the box office, the film did well enough on HBO Max to warrant the continuation of Gunn’s corner of the DCEU. The streamer’s upcoming Peacemaker series will take place before and after the events of the flagship film and leave the door open for Task Force X characters to return. That being said, Peacemaker, like The Suicide Squad, is intended for adults and may be unsuitable for children under 17, especially the ones dressed as Rick Flag and King Shark.
