On World UFO Day, Adult Swim posted a funny news video featuring Rick’s ship from Rick and Morty. World UFO Day is an annual event where people look closely at the sky to search for any unidentified flying objects. There are two separate dates in which people engage in the occasion, which are marked by specific events that happened in the past. On June 24, aviator Kenneth Arnold made the claim of seeing a UFO, which is noted as being the first reported citing that went mainstream. The other day is July 2, which refers to the date where a UFO may have crashed in 1947, also known as the “Roswell incident.”

Rick and Morty is an animated sci-fi comedy aimed towards more mature audiences. It follows the crazy adventures of scientist Rick Sanchez and his well-intentioned grandson, Morty Smith. The rest of the family is composed of Rick’s daughter, Beth, and her husband, Jerry, along with their daughter, Summer. When they aren’t at home spending time with family, Rick and Morty are going on inter-dimensional travels with life-threatening dangers around every corner. The series is currently on its fifth season, which will contain 10 episodes total.

Adult Swim posted a funny video on Twitter in appreciation of World UFO Day. It’s set up as a news broadcast, with a logo for fake news channel, RGN9. Indicating that the footage is an exclusive from the Pentagon, it displays the flying spacecraft that was captured on video in the sky, all with the caption in the tweet stating, “Proof of semi-intelligent life.” See below for the clip:

Regardless of whether or not one believes in UFOs or extraterrestrial life, there has been talk about them for a very long time across many different cultures. There are a lot of science-fiction movies, shows, and books that cover aliens and UFOs, making this aspect of sci-fi a major part of pop culture. The radio broadcast of The War of the Worlds in 1938 caused panic, as many listeners believed that a real alien invasion was taking place. However, it was just the radio show titled The Mercury Theatre on the Air, with the episode being an adaptation of H. G. Wells’ 1898 novel The War of the Worlds. So, it’s only natural that a comedy show would poke fun at it.

Adult Swim‘s Twitter feed isn’t too far off from how the channel itself plays at night. A lot of the content is seemingly random, which is right on brand for targeting their audience. With Rick and Morty currently airing season 5, the time placement of this video is perfectly aligned with World UFO Day. The clip feels like it was pulled straight from an episode of the show, as Rick and Morty’s adventures would surely place them in this situation. Of course, the government in the show knows about Rick’s adventures, which would certainly classify as a cover-up all its own.
