Dan Harmon, creator of Community and co-creator of Rick & Morty, is developing a new animated comedy for Fox set for release in 2022. Harmon has established himself as one of the most lauded names in modern TV comedy, with Rick & Morty receiving an order for 70 more episodes at Adult Swim prior to the release of season 4. The new series is the result of a deal Harmon signed with Fox last year.

Throughout his career as a writer, Harmon has built a reputation for eclectic, philosophy-driven comedy. His sharp, sardonic style has been praised by both viewers and critics alike, and his work often expands beyond the comedic to handle heavier themes like religion, racism, nihilism, and loneliness. Justin Roiland, the other co-creator of Rick & Morty, has since gone on to work on shows like Hot Streets and Solar Opposites.

Harmon is now venturing into a new project of his own. Fox Entertainment has announced the product of their 2020 deal with Harmon – a new animated comedy series intended for a 2022 release. The series, set in mythical ancient Greece, will focus on “a flawed family of humans, gods, and monsters that tries to run one of the world’s first cities without killing each other,” and will be wholly owned by Fox. Bento Box Entertainment, the animation studio behind shows like Bob’s Burgers and Central Park, will produce. The title, cast list, and other details of Harmon’s new show have yet to be announced.

Fox’s deal with Harmon is part of an ongoing focus on original animated content. Bob’s Burgers quickly became a massive success after debuting in 2011 and is now considered an early staple of the modern adult animation renaissance, which also includes shows like Bojack Horseman and Harmon’s Rick & Morty. The new series will be the first animated show owned entirely by Fox – a move that speaks to the network’s continued dedication to the medium.

Though the genre of adult-oriented animated comedy has exploded in recent years, the promise of a new original series from Harmon is still certainly a reason to get excited. Rick & Morty was instrumental in the genre’s recent boom, and both Rick & Morty and Community have gone on to widespread critical acclaim. Fox already has a strong grasp on the genre and a dedicated viewership, which bodes well for what’s to come. If Dan Harmon’s new show is even anywhere close to the quality of Rick & Morty, fans have plenty of reason to get excited.
