Rick and Morty collides with the world of The Matrix with new parody art to celebrate The Matrix Resurrections‘ theatrical and digital release. Developed by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon from a Back to the Future short parody created by the former, the Adult Swim series centers on mad scientist Rick Sanchez as he re-enters the life of his estranged daughter Beth and brings his nervous teenage grandson Morty on interdimensional adventures, much to the dismay of Morty’s dad Jerry and his sister Summer. Roiland leads the cast of Rick and Morty as both of the titular characters alongside Chris Parnell as Jerry, Spencer Grammer as Summer and Sarah Chalke as Beth.

Having run on Adult Swim for nearly a decade, Rick and Morty has become one of the most popular and celebrated adult animated shows for both the network and genre in general. Critics and audiences alike have praised the series for its originality, in-depth character development and themes, with the show going on to winning two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Animated Program for season 3’s “Pickle Rick” and season 4’s “The Vat of Acid Episode.” Rick and Morty is currently on hiatus following the conclusion of season 5 in September, though while season 6’s arrival is currently unknown, the show is keeping the laughs coming.

In honor of The Matrix Resurrections‘ release, the official Rick and Morty Twitter account shares a new piece of parody art work for the sci-fi action sequel. The image sees Rick in place of Keanu Reeves’ Neo as he battles multiple versions of Jerry designed after Agent Smith. Check out the funny parody art below:

The Rick and Morty parody art serves as a nice homage to the iconic brawl between Keanu Reeves’ Neo and Hugo Weaving’s Agent Smith clones in The Matrix Reloaded, albeit with an update closer to the longer-haired Neo of the newly released The Matrix Resurrections. Throughout its season 5 run, the Rick and Morty marketing team got creative with keeping anticipation high for each new episode with a number of crossovers. The claymation promos included everything from the blockbuster hits Godzilla vs. Kong and Indiana Jones to more independent fare such as Hobo with a Shotgun.

The Rick and Morty season 5 marketing also saw the series make its first venture into the world of live-action with ads starring Christopher Lloyd as the titular mad scientist and Jaeden Martell as Morty. The new parody art celebrating The Matrix Resurrections‘ release falls in line with the show’s previous celebration of Dune‘s release with official art and a comic book sending the multiverse duo to the desert planet of Arrakis. While audiences still have some time to go until Rick and Morty season 6’s premiere next year, they can finally catch up with The Matrix Resurrections on HBO Max and in theaters now.
