Adult Swim debuts a live-action clip for Rick and Morty starring Christopher Lloyd as Rick Sanchez and Jaeden Martell as his grandson Morty. The animated series hails from co-creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland and centers on the titular mad scientist as he returns to his adult daughter’s life and drags his grandson along for dangerous multiverse adventures, much to the chagrin of his timid son-in-law and indifference of his teenage granddaughter. Roiland leads the cast of the series as the titular duo with Sarah Chalke starring as Rick’s daughter Beth, Chris Parnell as her husband Jerry and Spencer Grammer as their daughter Summer.

Rick and Morty has become a cultural phenomenon since its premiere on Adult Swim in 2013, scoring large ratings for the late night network and winning two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Animated Program. Following the conclusion of season 3, Adult Swim entered into a long-term partnership with Harmon and Roiland for a massive 70-episode renewal of the series to be spread across an unspecified number of seasons that would also potentially minimize the gaps between seasons. With fans have speculated and theorized about a potential live-action adaptation of the series, it appears Adult Swim has been listening to these thoughts.

With just a few days remaining until the season 5 finale arrives, Adult Swim has shared a new clip for Rick and Morty. The video features a live-action recreation of the mad scientist’s garage/laboratory and his iconic green portal, with actors Lloyd and Martell stepping out as the C-132 versions of the titular characters. Since the series’ premiere and subsequent boost in popularity, many have taken to considering who would best carry a live-action version of Rick and Morty should a series or film be made. Though it may just be a clip to build anticipation for the season 5 finale, the decision to cast Lloyd and Martell as the titular duo proves to be an intriguing one but also one that’s not overly surprising. Before it found life as an Adult Swim series, Roiland created an animated short entitled The Animated Adventures of Doc and Marthi that acted as a parody of the Back to the Future trilogy, which starred Lloyd as the iconic Doc Brown.

The short live-action clip for Rick and Morty could be written off as a bit of marketing, though it is interesting to note that the video is paired with the caption “C-132,” an indication of which universe Lloyd and Martell’s duo belongs to. The series primarily focuses on the C-137 versions of the Smith family while book 1 of the comic books explored the events of the C-132 Rick and Morty. It will be interesting to see if a positive fan reaction to the live-action clip could see Adult Swim develop more bits with Lloyd and Martell returning or with new actors taking over the roles. In the meantime, fans can look forward to the season 5 finale of Rick and Morty arriving on Adult Swim on Sunday.
