Rick and Morty star Spencer Grammer, voice of Summer Smith, teases at the potential arrival of an Evil Summer variation in the future of the series. Created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, the series centers on the titular mad scientist and his teenage grandson as they embark on dangerous multiverse adventures, much to the chagrin of Morty’s parents. Alongside Grammer, the cast for the series includes Roiland as both Rick and Morty, Sarah Chalke as Rick’s daughter and Morty’s mother Beth and Chris Parnell as Rick’s timid-son-in-law and Morty’s father Jerry.

Since its premiere in 2013, Rick and Morty has received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike and become a smash hit for Adult Swim even garnering two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Animated Program. Amongst the many things to resonate with fans of the series is its array of characters, from the various alien races to even variations of the Smith/Sanchez family. While alternate versions of the family have been seen and range from better than the actual family to fascist variants, there is one character who my be getting a new take in the future.

Grammer recently spoke with Inverse to discuss the most recent season 5 of Rick and Morty. In looking towards the future of the series, the actress was asked about the possibility of an Evil Summer appearing in the series, responding with a “maybe” and explaining how a certain episode this season could work towards leading her down that path. See what Grammer said below:

“She’s the go-to person for Rick [in the Voltron episode]. It’s a little bit of Goodfellas or The Godfather. It was really fun because to be more in control and more like Rick in a lot of ways, which to me feels like a very natural progression for Summer. I can’t wait until she starts messing things up more. Evil Summer is probably the most like Rick she can possibly be. The female people in the family take after Rick a lot, so that’s where her intelligence lies. She’d have to beat out Rick’s mind, in a way?”

The possibility of an Evil Summer almost seems like an opportunity the writers room for Rick and Morty would be fools to miss out on. The series has frequently explored the thin line between good and evil in regards to Rick and his past as well as his adventures with Morty and has also featured evil versions of the Smith family, most notably the Evil Morty first introduced in season 1’s “Close Rick-counters of the Rick Kind,” who would later become the President of the Citadel in season 3’s “The Ricklantis Mixup.” However, where that version of the character came from another dimension, there have been plenty of signs in recent seasons that primary universe Summer is turning down a dark path, which would be an intriguing one to explore.

Though the writers of Rick and Morty also love to toy with audience expectations by leaving various threads unexplored or unresolved, namely that of The Citadel, they have shown a willingness to revisit them should the character development call for it, such as the returns of Space Beth in season 4’s “Star Mort Rickturn of the Jerri” and the Cronenberg World in season 3’s “The Rickshank Redemption.” Only time will tell whether an Evil Summer will be explored in future seasons of Rick and Morty.
