Hopoo Games and Gearbox Publishing revealed the sniper Railgunner, a brand new Survivor coming to Risk of Rain 2 in the upcoming Survivors of the Void expansion pack. Risk of Rain 2 is the third-person successor to Risk of Rain – a 2D platformer with randomized elements – that brought the titanic beasts and loads of loot to the 3D plane. The sequel has since established itself as one of the best roguelike games to release in recent memory, maintaining an overwhelmingly positive review average on Steam and successfully releasing on PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.

Risk of Rain 2 was in Early Access since March of 2019 before it officially launched in August 2020. Since then, however, the developers have not done much to expand the game, with most of the updates being bug fixes and minor changes. The first major expansion has been teased for over a year now and was originally set to launch in the last quarter of 2021. The expansion was expected to be around two to three content updates in size – larger than the content update the game got during its official launch. Risk of Rain 2 received an Anniversary Update in March 2021, which added the Bandit Survivor, five new items, and five skill variants, among other features.

In a press release to Screen Rant, Hopoo Games revealed the sniper Railgunner, the first of two new survivors in Risk of Rain 2: Survivors of the Void. The first-ever DLC expansion for the co-op roguelike shooter launches on Steam on March 1, 2022, and according to Hopoo Games co-founder Paul Morse, “is going bigger than anything [the developers] have done before.” Railgunner is a fast-paced Survivor armed with the M99 Sniper, which allows players to aim down sights to target enemy Weak Points and deal massive Critical Strike damage. Risk of Rain2’s Railgunner has an XQR Smart Round System and Concussion Devices that keep nearby enemies at bay by creating space and dealing quick damage to opponents within range. Like Risk of Rain 2’s The Captain, Railgunner’s special ability seems very powerful. Supercharge overloads her railgun sniper to deal 4,000% damage and creates an explosive blast to deal with several enemies at once.

Risk of Rain 2 added new Survivors in its Anniversary Update last year, including The Bandit and the secret The Heretic, which can only be unlocked by completing a difficult set of tasks. While Bandit is a high-skill combo character that finishes off weakened enemies, The Heretic utilizes extremely high base health, a triple jump, a faster movement rate, and a higher initial damage stat to mow down opponents. The Bandit was a playable character when the Anniversary Update first dropped, but The Heretic can only be unlocked by holding all four Heresy items at once. It’s likely that Railgunner will be playable without secret tasks when the first official DLC launches in March, though the expansion’s second Survivor is still shrouded in mystery.

Railgunner adds an FPS element to Risk of Rain 2 through the scope, which gives fans a different way to play the game. The rest of Survivors of the Void is expected to bring additional features that change how Risk of Rain 2 is played, though fans will have to wait a little longer to find out what Hopoo games has in store.
