When they started dating on Riverdale, Archie and Veronica had undeniable chemistry. Yet they ended up finding themselves in situations that made them look more like oil and water.

For Veronica, she was in a pretty decent position when she arrived in Riverdale. While her father was in jail and she and her mother had lost access to much of their money, they still lived a pretty luxurious life. She was instantly popular and acquired a lot of friends very quickly.

But once she started dating Archie, despite their obvious passion for one another, a number of things began to go wrong for Veronica.

10 Got Caught Up In Archie’s Messes

While Riverdale‘s de facto main character at first seemed like a pretty together high school kid, there was a lot of darkness bubbling beneath the surface. Archie wasn’t content with being the “good guy” and typical jock. He had other life passions he wanted to pursue and was confused about what to do with his future, overall.

When Veronica started dating him, she got caught up in all of this, from Archie’s desire to pursue a music career to his internal conflict about helping his father with the construction business while also not wanting to take over the company. Veronica came into Archie’s life before he had the chance to figure all of this out.

9 Issues Escalated With Her Father

Once Veronica started dating Archie, issues and the rivalry between she and her father began to escalate because he did not approve of his daughter’s new boyfriend. Veronica dating Archie caused Hiram to insert himself into Archie’s life and that of his family.

This led to bad blood resurfacing between the two families and a rivalry between Hiram and Archie’s father Fred brewing.

8 Her Father And Archie Got Too Close

It might be a good thing under any other circumstances for a father to take a liking to his daughter’s boyfriend. But not in this case. Once Hiram got over his dislike of Archie, he started to get close to him, but this was never a positive thing.

Hiram ended up using Archie to do his dirty work, possibly forever corrupting the young man. Not only that but he then went on to frame Archie for murder, leading to the high schooler’s undeserved stay in a juvenile detention center.

7 Strained Relationship With Her Mother

Veronica was always seemingly close with her mother Hermione as they stuck together through Hiram’s criminal and risky exploits. But once she started dating Archie and found herself constantly defending him or trying to stop her father from doing something to hurt Archie or his family, it put strain on her relationship with her mother.

At the time, Hermione was working her own plan to try and take down her husband. Nonetheless, having Archie in the picture meant Veronica was spending less time with her mother to help her through her troubles.

6 Complicated Betty and Veronica’s Friendship

While it happened before they were officially dating, Veronica kissed Archie in the closet during a high school party, even after she knew that Betty was secretly pining for her long-time best friend.

While they managed to get past this event, and Betty moved on to date Jughead once she came to terms with the fact the feelings were not reciprocated by Archie, it still left an unspoken stain on the friendship between Betty and Veronica.

5 Archie Started Becoming More Of A Bad Boy

It was after Archie’s stint working with Hiram, which happened only because he was dating Veronica and Hiram wanted to keep him close, that Archie started to become more of a “bad boy.”

He was always a jock and never lost his sweet nature, but arguably because of his relationship with Veronica, Archie began to do risky things he might not have otherwise done before. While Archie didn’t become a bad person, he did become a different one. And having the partial responsibility for that likely weighed heavily on Veronica.

4 Spent Too Much Time Defending Archie

So much of Veronica’s focus shifted to defending Archie about everything once they started dating. From going undercover to devise a plan to break him out of a juvenile detention center to talking him up to her father, it seems she was focused on clearing his name most of the time.

This led to Veronica losing some of her own identity as she became defined as either Hiram Lodge’s daughter or one-half of the Archie and Veronica duo versus a woman in her own right outside of being with him.

3 Archie Left Her Heartbroken

Because of everything Veronica’s father did to him, Archie was forced to go on the run after escaping from the juvenile detention center (with Betty and Veronica’s help). Because he did not know what the future held for him, Archie had to break up with Veronica.

This led to a broken heart that could have been avoided had Veronica and Archie just stayed away from one another so they would steer clear of Hiram’s wrath.

2 She Had Her Heart Broken…Again

Veronica Lodge from New York would never have imagined she could ever have gotten her heart broken once, much less twice, by Archie. But that is exactly what happened as a result of her relationship with Archie. Right before the time jump, Archie revealed to Veronica that he and Betty had kissed and that there might be something between them.

This broke Veronica’s heart and led to her having to put on a smiling face and pretend they were still together just so news of the unexpected break-up didn’t ruin the last week of school.

1 She Became A Third Wheel

Veronica would never have been a third wheel in any love triangle yet this is exactly what happened when she took up with Archie knowing that Betty had feelings for him. And while Archie had never really thought of Betty in a romantic way, it seems feelings did develop over time.

This meant that while Archie truly loved Veronica and they had a wonderful relationship for the time it lasted, deep down, Veronica was always a third wheel getting in the way of two people who should have been together from the beginning.
