The self-proclaimed bombshell of Riverdale, Cheryl Blossom had all the sass and charisma of a main character from the get-go. However, Cheryl wasn’t all shady burns, cute outfits, and savage comebacks — she had a lot going on under the surface. With a disturbed childhood, scandal in the family, and the loss of loved ones, Cheryl had had her fair share of terrible things in life.

Often, her friends were at the root of her suffering, with both Betty and Veronica blackmailing and threatening her several times. Cheryl always managed to bounce back from the dark times, but that didn’t mean that she deserved any of it.

Jason’s Death

The saddest thing that happened to Cheryl was her twin’s death. she and Jason were soulmates and shared a bond like no other. In the murk of the Blossom family politics, he was her shining light who kept her happy and hopeful about the future.

Losing Jason was a big blow for her, and the fact that her father was the one who killed him made the whole ordeal much worse. She not only lost a brother, but also a friend, confidante, and lifelong companion when Jason was murdered.

Among the most questionable parenting choices on Riverdale, sending Cheryl to The Sisters of Quiet Mercy was perhaps the worst. The Blossoms were undoubtedly unfit parents, and their reaction to Cheryl being queer was criminal.

At a young age, they sent Cheryl for gay conversion therapy to the Sisters, who were known to conduct horrible practices behind closed doors. They knowingly put her in harm’s way, refused to accept who she was, and gave her a hard time for it which was unacceptable.

Found Out That Her Ancestors Were Hunted Down

The entire town of Riverdale was a cesspool of murder and revenge, and Cheryl’s ancestors Abigail and Poppy were among the many who were wronged by the people of the town. Fans got to see the story of how the people of the town hunted down and ostracized Abigail and Poppy (one thing that Rivervale did better than Riverdale).

The injustice they had faced was something that hurt Cheryl, and when Archie, Veronica, and Betty refused to issue a formal apology to her, it made matters worse. They trivialized something that Cheryl held dear, and their blasé attitude was very disappointing.

Betty Blackmailed Her With Jason’s Murder

Cheryl was in a terrible state of loss after Jason’s death, and instead of supporting her during a traumatic time, Betty only twisted the knife further. She decided to defend Jughead and FP instead of helping find the truth and blackmailed Cheryl to formally pardon FP.

She went up to Cheryl in school, of all places, and threatened to release the video of Jason getting shot if she didn’t let the authorities know that her family forgave FP Jones formally. This was one of the worst things Betty ever did, and Cheryl suffered because of the lack of compassion she got from her peers.

Toni’s Grandmother Made Them Break Up

A sore point through Cheryl’s teenage years has been her sexuality and relationships, and Toni’s grandmother made things very difficult when she forbade Toni from dating Cheryl. The Uktena tribe had been wronged by the founders of the town, and the Blossoms were a part of that rampage.

The ancestral rivalry eventually brought an end to the most important relationship that Cheryl had in her life and robbed her of her one chance at happiness with a partner.

Got Accused Of Killing Jason By Veronica

In addition to Betty’s completely outrageous blackmailing, Veronica got angry and accused Cheryl of killing her brother, which was completely uncalled for. Amid an ongoing investigation, Veronica decided to taunt Cheryl for sharing an incestuous relationship with Jason and then shooting him with a gun when she got angry.

The entire accusation was really out of line, and the timing was even worse. Just because Cheryl was close to her brother didn’t mean it was romantic, and Veronica tainting her bond with her twin was the absolute worst.

Edgar Inducted Her Into A Cult

What began as an undercover operation for Betty into The Farm became a dangerous situation for Cheryl very quickly. She couldn’t keep her spy status very long as Edgard enticed her with visions of Jason, and the ability to “talk” to him, which poor Cheryl fell for.

She got sucked into The Farm very quickly, falling for all their false promises. They exploited Cheryl’s weaknesses, and that made her very vulnerable. She almost had her organs harvested as a result of this, and the experience was nothing less than traumatic.

Penelope Invited Strange Men Into Their Home

In addition to dealing with the past traumas of Penelope’s bad treatment, Cheryl had to put up with her inviting men into their home as she started sex work. It was completely unacceptable to turn her home into a brothel, especially when she had a minor living with her.

The most alarming part was that she invited dangerous men like Hal Cooper into her home, who was a murderer, which meant that Cheryl had been vulnerable to criminals as a teenager.

Nick St. Clair’s Attempted Assault

Something that hit Cheryl hard was when Nick St. Clair drugged her and attempted to rape her at an innocent party. The girls found Cheryl before anything untoward happened, and saved her life, but Cheryl’s parent was unsupportive of her.

Penelope blamed Cheryl for Nick’s transgressions and declared that she must have done something to invite it. Cheryl had to put up with a lot from Penelope, but her lack of care when her daughter was almost raped was incorrigible.
