The landscape of Riverdale has changed a fair bit since its premiere in 2017, but the personalities of every character in the show have remained as entertaining as ever. A simple murder mystery show went into the land of the occult, with Betty, Veronica, Archie, Jughead, and the rest in tow, bringing their scary and fun selves along for the ride.

Veronica has always been a ruthless Mafia Princess, while Archie’s penchant for protecting the town never fades. Betty is always looking out for the town, and Jughead is sardonic and cryptic as ever. Their words give away their inner selves, with quotes that describe their nature perfectly.

Veronica Lodge

“I Don’t Follow Rules, I Make Them. And When Necessary, I Break Them.”

There’s no doubt that Veronica is always full of the best quotes, but this one highlights her basic instinct well — she was brought up privileged and taught to win, and she was ready to do anything to come out at the top. Since she was a teen, she was shrewd with business, challenging her father by opening La Bonne Nuit and the rum operation, and twisted rules where she could.

She liked being a rule-maker and breaker both, which also earned her the title of “She Wolf Of Wallstreet” in New York. The Lodge scion took no prisoners and this line proved it.

Jughead Jones

“In Case You Haven’t Noticed, I’m Weird. I’m A Weirdo. I Don’t Fit In. And I Don’t Want To Fit In. Have You Ever Seen Me Without This Stupid Hat On? That’s Weird.”

Hats, hamburgers, literature, and typewriters ruled Jughead’s world, which made him a bit of an outcast even in his own friend group, which he was acutely aware of. After facing homelessness and being bullied and looked down on by the likes of Cheryl and Reggie, Jughead knew that embracing his “weirdness” was the way to go.

In fact, he reveled in how different he was from everyone else, so it sounded like he almost relished it when he had this angry outburst on Betty about his distinctions from other teens on Riverdale and their lives.

Betty Cooper

“I Do Everything For Everyone. Everything To Be Perfect. The Perfect Daughter, The Perfect Sister, The Perfect Student.”

For the youngest Cooper daughter, life was a struggle and perfectionism was just one of her demons. She had a dark side that made an appearance sometimes, the urge to hurt people, and an attraction to the gory, yet she did whatever she could to project her pastel pink image filled with ponytails and milkshakes.

Her real expertise lay in helping others by solving murders and crimes and giving people the justice they deserved. She really did try to help the town and her peers out as much as she could, even if the unpopular opinion about Betty is that she was narcissistic.

Archie Andrews

“From Now On, We’re Protecting Our Own.”

The leading hero of the show was the best at being exactly that — a hero. Riverdale was not only his home but also where he truly belonged. He had always been unselfish and generous, and his affinity for safeguarding his family and friends comes through beautifully in this quote.

Archie may have made some mistakes in his teen life, which included getting close to Hiram and becoming a vigilante, but his intentions were almost always geared towards protecting the town and his own.

Cheryl Blossom

“Wanna Team Up For A Little Destruction?”

Whether it was Penelope’s terrible parenting or just the violence that Cheryl had experienced through generations, she was attracted to destruction and had little to no control over her impulses. She would get nasty if someone wore red to school (sometimes Cheryl’s outfits weren’t red too) or would burn her home down if she wanted to teach her mother a lesson.

She was a nuanced character who had a tragic past, but her streak of violence couldn’t be ignored. She did as she pleased, and it mostly involved ruining something or someone.

Toni Topaz

“I’m So Proud Of You, Babe. You’re The Strongest Person That I Know.”

Even though Toni said this to Cheryl specifically, her character was so supportive and loving she would have said it to anyone else. As a Serpent, she helped out Jughead and her community, and after everybody else left for college, she stayed in Riverdale as a social services worker, counseling and rehoming young vulnerable kids.

She had always been a good friend to people and didn’t hesitate to give people words of encouragement and support when they needed it. She brought Cheryl out of her shell and did so with Fangs and countless other people too.

Reggie Mantle

“I Want To Be More Than Just Your Errand Boy. Your Pit Boss. Or Casual Hookup. I Want To Matter, Ronnie.”

Reginald was one of the funniest characters on the show, but he wasn’t just comic relief. Audiences learned in later seasons that he actually was in love with Veronica, who pretty much used him, and that he was envious of Archie’s relationship with his father.

Reggie had a turbulent bond with his father which ended up in him getting hurt, and he was sick of being a lackey for Veronica, Hiram, and anyone else. He wanted a meaningful, loving life like Archie’s and he made it clear.

Hiram Lodge

“It Doesn’t Matter How You Win, So Long As You’re The Last Man Standing.”

A criminal and lethal businessman, Hiram was the dirtiest man in Riverdale and he made it that way. Ever since he got involved with mobsters as a young boy, and lost his father because of them, he became ruthless and didn’t care if anyone got in his way, so long as he was the richest and the most powerful around.

He liked winning, even if it was against teenagers who were half his age, and in many cases his own daughter. Ethics and morals held little meaning for Hiram, and being at the top was his main concern, always.

Kevin Keller

“If You Can’t Accept What I Do, Whatever I Do, Then We’re Just…We’re Not Really Friends.”

Kevin was one of the sweetest players on the show, but his complex past and identity crises often made him do questionable things. When he struggled with his sexuality, he indulged in risk-filled behavior in Fox Forest and had a toxic relationship with Moose.

In a quest for belonging, he also found himself a part of the dangerous Farm, where organs were being harvested by the cult. Kevin was aware of these things but expected his friends to accept him for who he was, even if he messed up sometimes.

Tabitha Tate

“And The First Rule Of My Diner Is No Running Tabs.”

Pop Tate’s granddaughter may have been a later addition to the series, but her character has quickly become a big part of the show. She relishes in rules and routines, and that’s what keeps Tabitha organized and on top of things. She knows her vision for the diner and how she wants to run it, which includes no tabs and an authentic menu.

Her life revolved around the work of the Tates and their restaurant, to which she dedicated herself fully. This quote shows how she really stood up for her beliefs and never backed down on her values.
