Riverdale Season 2 Casts Betty’s Long-Lost Brother

Less than a week away from its season 2 premiere, Riverdale has cast Hart Denton as Betty (Lili Reinhart) and Polly’s (Tiera Skovbye) long-lost brother, Chic. The news comes just days after casting details revealed new information about the character, describing him as “tough, resourceful, rough around the edges, and distrustful of new people.” He apparently grew up in foster care and has a dark, mysterious past that he prefers to keep shrouded in secrecy. He didn’t finish high school and has been living on his own since 18, though he’s now in his mid-20s.

Fans will recall that at the end of season 1, Alice Cooper (Madsen Amcheck) told her daughters she’d had a baby in high school — a son — but given him up for adoption, meaning they had a brother somewhere out there that they’d never met. It was previously revealed that the child, Chic, would be introduced in season 2 around the midway point, but the show had yet to announce which actor would be playing him.

Now, according to TV Line, the role has gone to Denton, a relative newcomer with only two credits to his name: a one-episode stint in FOX’s 2016-launched cop series, Lethal Weapon, and a part in summer comedy Fun Mom Dinner.

That Riverdale opted for a fresh face doesn’t come as a surprise. With the exception of The Suite Life of Zack and Cody vet Cole Sprouse, many of the show’s young stars count Riverdale as their first major project. Camila Mendes (Veronica Lodge) was fresh out of school at NYU when she landed the part, while both K.J. Apa (Archie Andrews) and Reinhart had picked up a few TV spots, but Riverdale marks their first leading roles.

Denton also joins a number of new additions to the season, including Mark Consuelos (Pitch, The Night Shift) as Veronica’s father, Hiram Lodge, who’s fresh out of prison; Graham Phillips (The Good Wife) as Veronica’s old school pal Nick St. Clair, a troublemaking rich kid; and Vanessa Morgan as Toni Topaz, Jughead’s first friend at Southside High and a fellow Southside Serpeant (assuming he embraces his new induction to the gang).

And, like those characters, it sounds like Chic will shake up the Cooper family dynamic as more of an antagonistic force than a support system. He has a troubled past, and is likely harboring some resentment about the life Alice left him to lead, so it doesn’t seem likely that he’ll fall right in to their open arms, or even that the newly “broken” Betty will be there to welcome him.

Riverdale season 2 premieres Wednesday October 11 at 8pm on The CW.
