The Munsters director Rob Zombie has given his stamp of approval to a fan-made illustration of the titular characters in anticipation of his upcoming film adaptation of the classic sitcom. Zombie has made his name as a founding member of the heavy metal band White Zombie as well as directing a number of horror films known for their gore effects, most notably House of 1000 Corpses, The Devil’s Rejects, and 3 From HellThe Munsters will serve as his first time directing for a wider, more family-friendly audience.

The Munsters, based on the 1960s sitcom of the same name, will follow a family of benign monsters and their day-to-day lives in a satire of American wholesomeness and classic monster movies. The Munsters’ cast will feature Jeff Daniel Phillips, Daniel Roebuck, Richard Brake, Sylvester McCoy, and Zombie’s wife Sheri Moon Zombie. The film will see a simultaneous release in theaters and on Peacock.

Zombie shared the fan art, from user @petebregman on Instagram, showing an illustration of Grandpa, Lily, and Herman Munster, two vampires and Frankenstein’s monster, respectively. The design has an old-fashioned animation quality with exaggerated facial features and shapes. The characters themselves are in black and white, as the film will be, on a red velvet background. The art is “super rad,” according to the director himself. Check it out below:

A revival of The Munsters has languished in development hell for decades, with Bryan Fuller, Seth Meyers, and the Wayans brothers all having tried to get the property revived. The Munsters is currently being shot in Budapest, Hungary, and will likely need a long post-production period due to the effects-driven nature of the story, though Zombie has shown favor to practical effects and prosthetics in the images he’s released. Zombie has emphasized how the character’s designs will remain faithful to the source material and an exact replica of the mansion from the original series is being constructed for filming.

Though Zombie has made a career out of splatter films, such films only appeal to a niche market of movie fans. But similar to what Eli Roth – another director best known for his horror work – did with The House with a Clock in Its Walls, Zombie seems to be taking his passion for the genre and filtering it through a more family-friendly project. This move could easily see The Munsters making a big profit, similar to Roth’s film, which grossed over $130 million at the box office. It’s too soon to tell how good The Munsters will be, but with the passion and eye for detail Zombie has been displaying so far, it could shape up to be a satisfying offering for fans new and old.
