The latest incarnation of the Dark Knight from the upcoming The Batman, played by Robert Pattinson, has been reimagined in the animation style of Batman: The Animated Series in a stunning piece of fan art. Fans are eagerly awaiting the arrival of an all-new interpretation of the Batman mythos when director Matt Reeves’ long-awaited blockbuster releases in March. The film will see a more back-to-basics approach to Batman, who’s only in the second year of his crime-fighting career. and will be outside of any current DCEU canon.

Though it may be set early in his career, the film will feature several hallmarks from Batman’s 80+ year publication history. This includes classic rogues like the Riddler (Paul Dano), Penguin (Colin Farrell), and Catwoman (Zoë Kravtiz), as well as allies in Jim Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) and his faithful butler, Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis). With Batman being one of the most popular comic book characters of all time, the filmmakers clearly have enough faith in audiences’ established knowledge that they can ostensibly hit the ground running with this new version without the need for much backstory.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In anticipation of the movie, Instagram user @millicay.art has produced a striking piece of fan art that has reimagined Pattinson’s Batman in the style of Bruce Timm’s art seen in the beloved cartoon Batman: The Animated Series. The piece has Batman standing in front of a moon-lit red sky, as was a common stylistic choice when depicting Gotham in B:TAS. Batman himself is translated into Timm’s signature style of a simple but effective silhouette, complete with a barrel chest and a defined square jaw.

The style is actually pretty in line with what fans have seen from the marketing of the film so far, the red sky from the cartoon also being prominant in the promotional material. Fans have been wondering if the pop culture staple of the ’90s may be a source of inspiration for what is now the third cinematic version of Batman in the 21st century. Robert Pattinson recently spoke about the film’s exploration of Batman’s troubled personal struggle and felt that the only other film that captured that was the 1993 animated feature Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, a big-screen spinoff of the show.

Batman: The Animated Series is often regarded by fans as the defining interpretation of Batman. It adapted the characters from the comics with mature and thoughtful writing and spawned an entire DC Animated Universe. If The Batmanwere to evoke a sense of its tone or its creative choices, it would certainly please a large subsection of fans and prove to be a solid foundation for a new Caped Crusader. Luckily, fans will not have too much longer to wait to see what other parts of the Dark Knight’s mythos the new film will draw inspiration from.
