Rocket League has been going strong for over six years now, and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down soon, with new additions like its new 2v2 tournaments. When Rocket League went free-to-play last year, developer Psyonix opted for a soft reset in which the game’s seasonal updates were numerically reset to Season 1. Season 3 will be ending on August 11, and Season 4 is bringing the much-requested 2v2 tournaments at long last.

Tournaments have been a part of Rocket League‘s online play for a while now, but prior to Season 4, they had been a 3v3-exclusive affair. Two teams of three is the standard mode of play for Rocket League, though the game has ranked playlists for other teams sizes as well, such as doubles and solo. Tournaments have offered players a way to have a more structured competitive scene in addition to the traditional ranked mode, but those dedicated to the 2v2 variant of Rocket League have been left out of the fun until now.

This introduction of 2v2 tournaments comes hot off the heels (wheels?) of Rocket League’s Summer Road Trip event, which brought back some iconic crossover cars previously offered for a limited time. The game has had no shortage of fresh content since it launched, but in addition to the loads of cosmetic items, new gameplay elements have been frequent, with 2v2 tournaments just the most recent.

Rocket League’s 2v2 Tournaments Will Operate Just Like 3v3

For those who have been avidly playing Rocket League, the 2v2 tournament structure will need very little explaining. The Rocket League website confirmed that 2v2 tournaments will operate almost identically to the existing 3v3 tournaments. All that is required of players is to be online at the correct time, and the addition of 2v2 tournaments will make that task even easier, as 2v2 tournaments aren’t replacing any of the existing 3v3 tournaments, but are instead being added on top. Developer Psyonix notes that, dependent on region, “between eight and 13 additional tournaments a week” will be available on the schedule.

This expanded tournament schedule means that Rocket League’s extra modes will be getting their own tournaments as well. Entering the tournaments section of the in-game menus will provide players with the upcoming tournament schedule. Players just have to join when one becomes available and the game will take care of the rest: organizing participants into 32-team brackets based on competitive skill or previous tournament results. The brackets are single elimination up until the semifinal and championship rounds, at which point the matches become a best of three series.

Players don’t even need a pre-made team to enter the tournaments. Entering a 2v2 (or 3v3) tournament alone will randomly select a teammate to compete with. Participating in tournaments will reward players with Tournament Credits (to be spent on special cosmetic packs), and winning a championship will give players a unique title to be displayed under their username. The game became popular because of its skill-driven, high-octane gameplay, but continuous content updates like the addition of 2v2 tournaments have given Rocket League long-term success.
