Agent was announced in 2007 as one of Rockstar Games’ newest IPs, set to take players on an adventure during the peak of the Cold War in the late 1970s. Gameplay would focus on a mixture of stealth and action as players made their way through a world of espionage and counter-intelligence. The game was being developed by Rockstar North, the team behind Grand Theft Autoand was scheduled to release exclusively on the PlayStation 3 console. However, the development cycle of Agent hit numerous snags and the project was shelved, leaving many to wonder if it will ever be released.

Rockstar hyped Agent as one of the next breakthroughs in gaming at E3 2009, saying that the upcoming title would push the edges of the gaming industry and set the bar for any action titles that came afterwards. Ben Feder, the former president of Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two Interactive, expressed his personal belief in the success of the project reaching the heights of the Grand Theft Auto franchise. Expectations for Agent were high after E3, with fans eager to play Rockstar’s new adventure.

After E3 2009, Take-Two Interactive maintained the stance that Agent was still under development by Rockstar, despite the fact that no gameplay footage had been seen by the public. Hints at developmental issues began circulating during E3 2011, with the possibility that Agent wouldn’t be a PlayStation 3 exclusive if Rockstar decided against it. Information about the project became more scarce, with only an art leak in 2011 showing any sort of progress on the game.

How Agent’s Development Continued To Go Wrong

Things looked more dire for Agent when Take Two’s financial report for 2012 was released, which did not include the stealth game. Fans predicted that the title would be released on the PlayStation 4 at launch, hoping that Rockstar was developing the title to showcase the power of the next generation of consoles. The speculation was not rewarded when the PS4 dropped without the game as a launch-day exclusive, leaving Agent’s whereabouts a mystery.

Fans were given hope about Agent when the developer renewed the trademark for the game in 2013. However, Rockstar North was releasing Grand Theft Auto 5 the same year and and working to begin GTA Online support, so it seemed that Agent wasn’t going to be as high on the list of priorities as fans suspected, and the art team for Agent was eventually reassigned to Grand Theft Auto 5.

The Agent trademark was renewed one final time in December 2016, but Take-Two reportedly abandoned Agent‘s trademark in the United States Patent and Trademark Office in November 2018. Nothing else has been said about Agent since then, with Rockstar North staying extremely busy with GTA Online and presumably the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6. Unless something drastic happens, it seems that Agent won’t release in 2021 or any time soon – if it ever comes out at all.
