After nearly two years of being a Japanese exclusive, Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe has recently released worldwide. Publisher Square Enix is no stranger to mobile free-to-play games, already having commercial success with their Final Fantasy Brave Exvivus line of games. As with many of their other “gacha” style games, it can be a bit confusing figuring out how things work. This guide will help explain how to easily level up characters in a fast and effective manner.

Although the SaGa series is extremely popular in Japan and other parts of Asia, it failed to gain widespread appeal in the West. One reason being that the original Romancing SaGa games were never officially translated into English on the SNES. This could have made them as notable as classics like Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana. Hopefully, Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe will help the franchise become more recognizable.

Dojo Leveling in Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe

The town Dojo is the main area to improve characters’ attribute bonuses and collect passive EXP. Unlike most role-playing games, EXP does not directly help characters, instead, it is used to improve their combat Styles. Each character has three Style ranks: A, S, and SS. You will most likely find A Styles first, but since the Summon system is random and special event Missions change, it is possible to obtain a character’s S and SS Styles first. Each Style has different growth, stat caps, and skills making it important to level all three of them at some point.

Enhancing Style

Enhancing a Style uses a character’s stored up EXP, and will give percentage bonuses (or remove negative penalties) to their base Style attributes, occasionally raise some character attributes (universal to all of their Styles), and possibly unlock skills. Since EXP is accumulated on a character, you can choose which Style it will boost. For example, the main character Polka might be in Style A for a large part of the campaign, but by holding off on leveling right away the EXP could instead be invested in Style S or SS as soon as they are unlocked.

Raise Style Cap and Training

The Style level cap is initially 30, but can be raised up to level 50 by using puzzle pieces. Generic pieces that can be used on all characters drop as rewards for story Quests and daily/weekly Missions. If you Summon a Style you already own, it will instead be replaced by a number of its unique puzzle pieces.

Later, once progressing far enough in the story you can unlock Training, which allows you to spend daily Stamina to have a Style unlock its pieces over a set period of time. Since Stamina is also needed to go on Quests, it is best to wait on using Training until you both need specific pieces and have spare Stamina.

Expeditions

Expeditions are another unlockable feature of the Dojo. It can be used to build up Styles either quickly or while not actively playing. Five character can go on a single Expedition at a time, with success or failure rate depended on their attributes. In most cases, an Expedition will take several hours to conclude on its own, but can also be instantly completed by spending acquired Expedition tickets. On a successful outing, characters may gain attribute improvements based on their chosen Style’s growth and some EXP. If you have tickets to spare, rushing hard Expeditions can be the fastest way of improving characters.

Improving Attributes with Quests in Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe

While Expeditions are great for supplementary EXP, the bulk of improving characters are going to come from finishing Quests. Storyline Quests are best structured to provide steady leveling and award some Stamina; daily and event Quests may also be used to level up when you already have excess Stamina. Since every Quest requires a set amount of Stamina to attempt, it is best to be certain you are going on ones that you have a high probability of winning. Losing an encounter has no consolations. Typically, aim for normal difficulty first, before challenging hard and very hard modes.

A Suitable Party

Many of the encounters in Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe are more about attrition than brute force. When making a party for grinding EXP it would be good to have at least one Defender, Supporter, and Jammer Style. Although it can be unpredictable on which characters you will Summon, try to aim for party members like Blue, Cat, Ginny, Undine, Sophia, Albert, Ellen, and Barbara who all have buffs and debuffs.

Having good equipment, high stats like HP, LP, END, AGI, and WIL are useful; as are skills and spells that alter attributes and heal. The characters you take should be in a Style with either a high attribute growth you are aiming for, or have a larger attribute cap than their counterparts. Additionally, be sure to give characters a cross-Style inherited ability once they have multiple Styles unlocked.

During and After Battle

Characters can gain new physical abilities and moves during active combat; already learned moves will also improve in rank the more frequently they are used on the enemy. Spells are only learned after combat, which can make it a bit risky to take primary casters on their first fight. If you are specifically trying to boost a move, you may want to manually control the fight. In other cases, it might be easier to just enter auto-battle to finish an encounter quickly.

After combat is also the main way characters gain increased attributes. The more difficult the enemy, along with their Style growth weight, will determine the likelihood that any of their attributes will improve. Yes, it is possible to fight an entire Quest and gain no attributes. Thankfully, some EXP will be gained to take to the Dojo and improve the characters further.
