Caution: Spoilers Ahead for Ron’s Gone Wrong

Interest has been expressed in making Ron’s Gone Wrong 2. The animated film originally did poorly in theaters, generating just $23 million at the domestic box office, but Ron’s Gone Wrong has found new life on Disney+. Whether it’s a theatrical or streaming release, there is a lot to be excited about for a potential sequel to Ron and Barney’s first adventure.

The 2021 film was acquired by Disney through 20 Century Studios and follows a young boy named Barney. Barney is an outcast at his school, which isn’t helped by the fact that he does not have a B-Bot, an android which kids use to access social media and make friends. This is until one day when his dad brings home a discarded B-Bot for Barney’s birthday. Barney soon realizes that his new best friend, named Ron, who shares similar qualities to Big Hero 6‘s Baymax, has none of the settings of a normal B-Bot and is able to express different characteristics than other B-Bots, landing the two into exciting hijinks.

While Ron’s Gone Wrong 2 has yet to be confirmed, there are factors that could point to the sequel being a strong possibility in the future. There are a few possible directions a sequel could go in considering the film’s ending, but nothing is conclusive as of yet in regards to the story. However, there does seem to be interest in making a sequel from those who worked on the film, so if all goes right, Ron and Barney’s adventures could eventually have a continuation.

Could Ron’s Gone Wrong 2 Happen?

Voices of Jack Dylan Grazer and Zack Galifianakis in Ron’s Gone Wrong

While no official announcement of a sequel has been made, co-director Jean-Philippe Vine and star Jack Dylan Grazer both seem very open to the possibility of a Ron’s Gone Wrong continuation. In an interview with RadioTimes.com, Jack Dylan Grazer was asked if he would like to return for a Ron’s Gone Wrong 2 were it to happen, and his response was that he’d “absolutely” like to return for a sequel, “Even if it takes five more years.” The co-director also had some promising words to say about a possible Ron’s Gone Wrong 2 and the future of the world that they created in the first film, and while it may not happen any time soon, the future is looking bright for Ron:

“We have started to think about how the world of Ron could grow and where we could go after this movie but we’re kind of holding on to those ideas for the time being. But, it’s super exciting, you can see the progression that happens with Ron and it also gives us opportunities to do really cool things further with the story.”

How Ron’s Gone Wrong Sets Up For A Sequel

While the Disney-distributed film had a conclusive ending to its story, there are still many possibilities for a Ron’s Gone Wrong 2 to build on the ground that the first film laid. Considering that the first film ended with Ron’s code being uploaded into every B-Bot and Ron losing his physical form, a possibility could be for Ron to somehow obtain a new physical shell. This would give Barney his own Ron back and the two can once more face any dangers that may arise.

Why Ron’s Gone Wrong’s Box Office Isn’t A Problem

Considering Ron’s Gone Wrong‘s remarkable success on Disney+, an easy fix to its box office disappointment is to pen the sequel specifically for Disney+. This way, marketing costs are significantly cut down, and the film won’t risk losing money from a costly theatrical release. This will also be a win for families, as they can save money and watch the film with their Disney+ subscription.

Ron’s Gone Wrong 2 Predicted Release Date

As of now, no official plans for a Ron’s Gone Wrong 2 have been announced, so a release date before 2023 is highly unlikely. If the sequel were to start production late next year, it could see a release sometime in 2024. However, seeing as plans are on hold for the moment, it doesn’t look like we’ll be seeing anymore of Ron and Barney’s adventures for awhile.
