Multiple people are accusing RuPaul’s Drag Race season 11 star Soju of sexual assault, some alleging that it went on for several years. With Drag Race, RuPaul has given a platform to many LGBTQ+ artists who struggled to get their big break in the entertainment business. In total, this franchise has now produced 13 seasons, five All-Stars, and a handful of spin-offs. The show has also greenlit an ever-growing number of international editions, such as the ongoing RuPaul’s Drag Race UK series airing on the BBC.

Unfortunately, last year’s Drag Race season 12 faced a few unprecedented circumstances. For one, it had to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, which made it impossible for the series to film a proper grand finale and for the queens to make money working at live venues. But another huge issue that plagued the season was the revelation that contestant Sherry Pie had sexually exploited various men in the past. Despite the fact that Sherry had gotten very far into the season, the queen was disqualified from the season and erased from the show’s editing.

Now, RuPaul’s Drag Race alum Soju is being accused of sexual assault. The allegations pertain to Tony Hyunsoo Ha, who is the man behind the Soju drag persona. As seen below, the first alleged victim, who goes by the Twitter handle @mynameisntkev_, shared his statement on the evening of Thursday, January 21. The victim wrote, “From January of 2016 to January of 2018, I was sexually assaulted, manipulated, and gaslit by Soju several times.” The second alleged victim, @GlamourCadaver, also accused Soju of sexual assault taking place between September 2016 and December 2017. There was also a third person, @mx_kevyn, that shared alleged DMs exchanged with Soju.

As the discourse unraveled within the RuPaul’s Drag Race fandom, Tony Hyunsoo Ha a.k.a. Soju responded to a request for comment from Out: “While I await full advice from my legal representative to make an official statement, I will share that I have anticipated these claims after threats and an extortion attempt were sent to me as recently as January 2020.” In any case, many Drag Race queens are reacting to the news. For example, All Stars 5 winner Shea Coulee and season 13 contestant Denali replied to the original accusation.

Judging from the queen’s initial reaction, it seems like Soju has a different side to these stories. The fans must now wait and see how this story will develop in the coming days and weeks.
