The second Unhinged movie trailer for the Russell Crowe-led thriller was released today, almost exactly one week before the film is slated to hit theaters next Friday. Directed by Derrick Borte, the movie focuses on young woman Rachel (Caren Pistorius) and her teenage son Kyle (Child’sPlay‘s Gabriel Bateman), whom Crowe’s character begins to stalk after an incident at a stoplight.

As an actor, Crowe is best-known for his work in Les Miserables and for his Academy Award-winning performance in A Beautiful Mind. However, for Unhinged, he seems to be taking a detour as a middle-aged man with remarkably terrifying road rage. Per the official synopsis for the movie, Crowe’s character Tom Cooper is described as an “unstable man” who targets Rachel. Now a new trailer offers a more stylized look at the action thriller.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In the new Unhinged movie trailer released by Solstice Studios, the video is framed as a 70s-style driving safety PSA before showcasing Rachel’s aggressive driving that sparks the conflict of the movie. Cuts throughout the trailer suggest Tom is greatly affected by some trauma, which drives him to stalk and terrorize those who have wronged him on the road. Watch the full Unhinged trailer below, which ends with a note the movie will be “only in theaters.”

Like many of the late spring and summer’s planned releases, Unhinged has seen its release date shuffled a number of times, but not like many other affected movies. The film was originally scheduled to be released on Aug. 28 before it was pushed to Sept. 4. Then, in May, the film moved its release again, only this time, they moved it up two months – to July 1 – in order to “be the first to test the waters as theaters try to rebound” from the coronavirus pandemic. Its release was then pushed to July 10, and then to July 31, before the studio delayed it once more to its current planned release date of Aug. 21. Regardless of it not feeling like or being a legitimate blockbuster – it’s certainly no Tenet or Mulan – its studio and filmmakers seemingly hope its release next week could serve as a watershed moment for the cinematic experience post-COVID-19. Whether that happens, of course, remains to be seen.

Conceptually, the approach makes sense. Though decisions to release a movie now requires a studio to consider all pandemic-related guidelines, and the overwhelming risks that come with it, such as financial concerns and endangering the general public – the latter of which should undoubtedly be a higher priority than the former. The Theater Owners Association believes it’s time to usher out releases as planned, since there’s no guarantee that major markets will reopen later this year. So perhaps it does make the most sense for a C-level, low-stakes thriller centered around a deranged man’s road rage to be the film that attempts to “reopen” theaters. Regardless, Unhinged has its plan. For better or worse – and at least for right now – it’s sticking to it.

Unhinted releases in theaters Friday, August 21.
